Onboarding Retreat in Marrakech: Welcoming New Hires as a Group

An onboarding retreat brings together, for two or three days, the people who joined the company over the past months: to tell them the company’s story, to have them meet the leadership and the teams, and to build between them the bonds that an online induction never builds. Holding it in Marrakech adds what the format is looking for: a clean break from the office, a place people remember, and a flight of under four hours from most Western European capitals. According to our calculator, budget roughly €6,400 to €10,500 for fifteen new hires over two nights in a 4-star hotel, or €425 to €701 per person, and €18,100 to €30,600 for an intake of thirty over three nights with an evening and a workshop, flights excluded. Here is how to build it.

Why an onboarding retreat, and why abroad?

Onboarding starts before a new hire’s first day and ends when they are autonomous, often months later. The retreat is only one moment in that journey, but it is the only one where a whole intake of recruits is in the same place with leaders who have time. It delivers three things: a shared story of the company told by the people who make it, a network of colleagues who joined at the same time, and face-to-face meetings with teams you will work with but never otherwise meet.

Going abroad is not compulsory, but the trip changes the status of the moment. A seminar in a room next to the office feels like a meeting; two nights in Marrakech feel like an event, and that is precisely the effect you want for people discovering the company. The trade-off is well known: the work programme has to be real and documented so that the stay is not treated as a benefit to employees. When to schedule it, and for how many people?

Two rhythms exist. A company that hires continuously groups arrivals into intakes once or twice a year: each recruit attends the first retreat after joining, between their first and sixth month. A company that hires in waves, an intake of graduates, interns or apprentices in September, holds the retreat in the first weeks (higher budget in September-October). In both cases the headcount is generally between fifteen and sixty, leaders and managers included.

For dates, avoid Marrakech’s high season, March to May and September to November, if the budget is tight, and check the Moroccan calendar: in 2027 Ramadan is expected around 8 or 9 February. Our guide to the best time for a corporate retreat in Marrakech in 2027 goes through the months. Six months ahead is comfortable for booking the hotel and the flights; the planning timeline for a retreat dates every step.

A two-night programme

An onboarding programme alternates three kinds of sequence: presentations (history, strategy, organisation, products), meetings (leaders, managers, support functions) and time among recruits. Presentations take the mornings, when attention is best; meetings happen in small groups in the afternoon; time among recruits is the meals, the activity and the evening.

Time Day 1 Day 2 Day 3
Morning Flight, transfer, welcome coffee The company today: strategy, organisation, key figures My path here: six-month objectives, mentoring, questions
Lunch Mixed tables (recruits and leaders) Tables by function Closing lunch
Afternoon The company’s story told by a founder or a leader; round table of recruits Meetings in groups of 4 to 6 with support functions, then a medina treasure hunt in mixed teams Transfer, return flight
Evening Dinner on a rooftop Evening at the hotel with a DJ, or a dinner show in town

Two details make the difference. The recruits’ round table on the first afternoon must be prepared: two minutes each, with a set question that is not “introduce yourself”. And the lunch tables on day one are assigned, so that every recruit eats with a leader they would never have approached alone.

Which activity for people who do not know each other?

An onboarding activity must mix teams, give everyone a role and be played in small groups of four to six, where nobody can hang back. Three formats meet that definition in Marrakech. The medina treasure hunt, €30 to €45 per person in our model, forces people to find their way and talk to strangers. The Moroccan cooking class, €45 to €70 per person, ends with a meal the group has cooked itself. The craft workshop, €25 to €45, suits groups that prefer calm. For an intake of sixty, the treasure hunt still works; workshops run in rotations. Our comparison of team building activities in Marrakech helps you choose.

Riad, hotel or estate?

For up to about ten people, a riad where the group takes every room gives it a house of its own, a lounge for presentations and a rooftop for dinners; beyond that, bedrooms run out, and fifteen people in single rooms need two neighbouring riads. Our article on a corporate retreat in a riad does the maths. Our budgets price the riad at room rates; exclusive use, €2,000 to €15,000 a day, is quoted separately. For thirty to sixty people, a 4-star hotel with its meeting room is the simplest choice, and the evening can be held on site in a private lounge. An estate outside town offers quiet and a pool, but every outing needs a shuttle. For an onboarding retreat we recommend the hotel: recruits must be able to bump into each other at breakfast, at the bar, in the lobby, and that is where many connections happen.

How much does an onboarding retreat in Marrakech cost?

We ran four scenarios through the model behind our seminar and team building budget calculator. Each includes the nights in single rooms, the working days (room, breaks, lunch), audio-visual where there is any, dinners, the activity, airport transfers and a 10% contingency. Flights, alcoholic drinks, tourist tax and agency fees are excluded.

Scenario Total budget Per participant
15 people, two neighbouring riads, 2 nights, 2 working days, treasure hunt €5,400 to €9,000 €359 to €602
15 people, 4-star hotel, 2 nights, 2 working days with audio-visual, treasure hunt €6,400 to €10,500 €425 to €701
30 people, 4-star hotel, 3 nights, 2 working days, hotel evening with DJ, cooking class €18,100 to €30,600 €604 to €1,020
60 people, 4-star hotel, 2 nights, 2 working days, hotel evening with DJ, treasure hunt €27,200 to €45,000 €454 to €750

The cost per head falls with group size on the fixed lines, audio-visual, DJ, lounge hire, but most of the budget stays proportional to nights and participants. The line that matters to an HR director is the second one: at fifteen recruits in a hotel, the retreat comes to €425 to €701 per person excluding flights, to set against the cost of a hire that does not work out. The line-by-line detail is in our all-inclusive corporate retreat in Marrakech guide.

Mistakes to avoid

A retreat made of presentations. Three days of slides build no bonds. Presentations fit in the mornings; the rest is meetings and activities.

Leaders who drop in. A leader who speaks for an hour and leaves sends the opposite message to the one intended. Ask two or three of them to stay both days, meals included.

Forgetting the follow-up. The retreat sets appointments: a mentor, a six-month objective, a thirty-day check-in. Without them it remains a good memory with no effect.

Formalities. Every participant needs a passport valid for the whole stay and a return ticket; a recruit who recently arrived from abroad may need a visa, to be checked at registration.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an onboarding retreat in Marrakech cost?

According to our calculator, around €425 to €701 per person for fifteen participants over two nights in a 4-star hotel with audio-visual and a treasure hunt, and €454 to €750 for sixty participants with a DJ evening, flights excluded.

How long should an onboarding retreat last?

Two nights and two working days are enough for presentations, meetings and one activity. Three nights suit a large intake or a programme with an evening away from the hotel.

Which activity works for new hires?

An activity in small mixed teams: a medina treasure hunt, a cooking or craft workshop, from €25 to €70 per person in our model.

Can interns and apprentices take part?

That is the company’s decision; each needs a valid passport, and some nationalities need a visa, to be checked with Morocco’s foreign ministry before booking flights.
