Small Team Offsite in Marrakech: 10 to 20 People, Venues and Budget

A small team of ten to twenty people has an advantage large groups never get: it fits in a riad, it travels on a single flight, it moves in two minibuses, and it can work in a lounge instead of a conference room. It is the typical format of a scale-up, a small company, a regional office or a project team. According to our calculator, a two-night offsite with two working days in Marrakech costs around €3,900 to €6,600 for twelve people in a riad at room rates, or €326 to €552 per participant, and €7,200 to €12,000 for twenty with a medina treasure hunt, flights excluded. Here are the venues that suit this size, a two-night programme, and what changes compared with a fifty-person seminar.

What changes when you are ten or twenty

The venue first. At this size a riad becomes possible: a house built around a patio, five to ten bedrooms, a lounge to work in, a rooftop for dinner. When the group takes every room it has the place to itself; contractually guaranteed exclusive use is priced separately, €2,000 to €15,000 a day depending on the riad’s size. Our article on a corporate retreat in a Marrakech riad works out the bedrooms; remember that an eight-bedroom riad sleeps eight in single rooms and sixteen when sharing.

The rhythm next. Ten people do not need a plenary hall, a microphone or a technician: a table, a screen and a flip chart will do, and the audio-visual line disappears from the budget. Meals fit around one table, which opens up the city’s restaurants without private hire. And transfers happen by minibus, with no coach and no airport rotations.

The risk, finally. A small team already knows each other; the danger is not shyness but routine. The programme has to leave the office for real: a workshop somewhere that does not look like a meeting room, an activity that mixes roles, a dinner where nobody talks shop.

Three venues for a small team

Riad in the medina House or villa outside town 4-star hotel
Sleeps 5 to 10 in single rooms, twice that sharing Depends on the house, usually 8 to 20 No limit at this size
Work space Lounge opening onto the patio, rooftop Large living room, garden, poolside Equipped meeting room
Audio-visual Limited: screen and flip chart Usually hired in Included or charged by the day
Access On foot from the last point a car can reach Shuttle for every outing Direct, taxis at the door
Best for A team that wants a place of its own, informal work A team that wants quiet and a pool, self-run sessions A team that presents, projects, records

The riad is the natural choice for about ten people; twelve in single rooms need two neighbouring riads. Between fifteen and twenty you need a large riad, two neighbouring riads or a house outside town: our guide to a corporate retreat in a private villa in Marrakech compares the two. The hotel remains the answer when the programme includes technical presentations, or when everyone wants their own room, no discussion.

A two-night programme

A format suited to a small team is two nights and two working days: arrive late morning on day one, two afternoons and one full morning of work, fly home early afternoon on day three. Marrakech is under four hours’ flight from most Western European capitals, and Morocco stays on GMT all year round, one hour behind Central European Time in winter and two in summer.

Time Day 1 Day 2 Day 3
Morning Flight, transfer, check-in, lunch Session 2: the core topic, in groups of 3 to 5 Session 4: decisions, who does what, dates
Afternoon Session 1: objectives, where we stand Medina treasure hunt or cooking class Lunch, transfer, return flight
Evening Dinner at the riad or on a rooftop Dinner in town, free evening

For the day-two activity, two formats suit small groups particularly well because they are played in teams of five or six: the medina treasure hunt, €30 to €45 per person in our model, and the group Moroccan cooking class, €45 to €70. A team that never meets because it works remotely will find a three-night format in our article on a company offsite in Marrakech for a remote team.

How much does a 10 to 20 person offsite in Marrakech cost?

We ran four scenarios through the model behind our seminar and team building budget calculator. All include the nights in single rooms, the working days (room, breaks, lunch), dinners, airport transfers and a 10% contingency. Flights, alcoholic drinks, tourist tax and agency fees are excluded. In a riad the model counts no audio-visual: a screen is enough. The riad is priced at room rates; exclusive use of a whole riad is quoted separately.

Scenario Total budget Per participant
12 people, two neighbouring riads, 2 nights, 2 working days €3,900 to €6,600 €326 to €552
12 people, 4-star hotel, 2 nights, 2 working days with audio-visual €4,800 to €8,100 €403 to €673
20 people, two neighbouring riads, 2 nights, 2 working days, medina treasure hunt €7,200 to €12,000 €359 to €602
20 people, 4-star hotel, 3 nights, 2 working days, evening in the Agafay desert, cooking class €17,400 to €29,300 €870 to €1,465

Two lessons. The riad costs less than the hotel for twelve people, because the model drops the audio-visual there and prices the night at €70 to €120 against €80 to €130 in a 4-star. And it is the evening out of town that adds the most to the budget: in the fourth scenario, hiring an Agafay desert camp weighs €5,000 to €9,000 on its own, a fixed cost that spreads badly across twenty people. For a small team, a desert evening is worth it if it is the high point of the trip; otherwise dinner on a medina rooftop costs €25 to €45 per person. The line-by-line detail is in our all-inclusive corporate retreat in Marrakech guide.

Pitfalls specific to small groups

The riad that is too small. The question to ask before the photos: how many bedrooms, and how many can take two separate beds? Many riad bedrooms only have one large bed.

Minimum billing. Some venues and suppliers set a minimum headcount or a flat fee: a workshop billed for fifteen when you are ten. Ask for the price for your exact number.

A large-group programme. A plenary, a keynote speaker and sub-committees make no sense at twelve. Work around one table, and keep breakout groups for a single session.

Confusion with a leisure trip. A company-paid stay abroad must keep a real, documented work programme so that it is not reclassified as a benefit to employees. Our article on a company retreat abroad and benefits in kind sets out the criteria under French rules.

When to book?

Riads are booked three to six months ahead, villas one to three months, hotels three to six months. For a small team the flight is rarely the problem: ten to twenty seats are available on a scheduled flight without a group block, especially outside high season (March to May, September to November). Each participant needs a passport valid for the whole stay and a return ticket.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an offsite for 10 people in Marrakech cost?

According to our calculator, around €326 to €552 per participant for twelve people in a riad, two nights and two working days, and €403 to €673 in a 4-star hotel with audio-visual, flights excluded.

Can a riad host an offsite for 20 people?

To sleep there, you need a large ten-bedroom riad with shared rooms, or two neighbouring riads. To work and dine without staying over, most riads take twenty people.

Do we need to hire audio-visual for a small team?

Rarely. A screen and a flip chart are enough at twelve; sound and a technician become useful above thirty people or for recorded presentations.

Which activity for a team of 12?

A medina treasure hunt or a cooking class: both are played in teams of five or six and cost €30 to €70 per person.
