Corporate Retreat Abroad: Marrakech, Lisbon or Barcelona?

For a corporate retreat abroad from France, Barcelona is the closest (about 850 km from Paris as the crow flies), Lisbon comes next (about 1,450 km) and Marrakech is the furthest (about 2,100 km, or roughly three hours’ flight from Paris). For French citizens, Lisbon and Barcelona only require a national ID card and you pay in euros; Marrakech requires a passport and you pay in dirhams, but it offers by far the warmest winter days: average highs of 19 to 24°C from December to March, against 14 to 19°C in the two European cities. Here is the point-by-point comparison, with the source of each figure.

How long does it take to get there?

Great-circle distance gives a reliable ranking whatever the departure airport. From Paris, Barcelona is about 850 km away, Lisbon 1,450 km and Marrakech 2,100 km. From Lyon: 550, 1,400 and 1,950 km. From Nantes: 700, 1,100 and 1,800 km. From Bordeaux: 450, 950 and 1,600 km. From Marseille: 350, 1,300 and 1,750 km. From Toulouse, Barcelona is only 250 km away. Depending on where you start, the trip to Lisbon is 60 to 80% of the distance to Marrakech; the trip to Barcelona is less than half everywhere.

All three cities have direct flights to Paris and to several large regional cities in France. Airline schedules change every season: check operating days and seat availability when you block seats, especially if participants fly from several cities. For Marrakech, allow roughly three hours’ flying time from Paris.

What distance does not tell you is the total door-to-door time. For a two-day seminar, a travel day at each end weighs heavily; for three nights or more, the gap between two and three hours in the air matters less than the flight times available. If your group can only get away for two days, Barcelona has a clear advantage.

What will the weather be like during the seminar?

Average high (°C) Oct. Nov. Dec. Jan. Feb. Mar. Apr. May
Marrakech 28.5 23.1 20.1 19.1 20.7 23.6 25.7 29.4
Lisbon 22.5 18.2 15.2 14.8 16.2 18.8 19.8 22.1
Barcelona 22.1 17.3 14.3 13.6 14.3 16.1 18.0 21.1

From October to May, Marrakech stays four to eight degrees ahead of the other two cities. That is the main argument if you want coffee breaks and lunches outdoors in the middle of winter. In summer the order is reversed: with average highs close to 38°C in July and August, Marrakech calls for sessions in air-conditioned rooms and activities early in the morning or in the evening, while Lisbon and Barcelona stay below 29°C.

Rain matters too. In Lisbon, November and December are the wettest months, with more than 120 mm and about ten to eleven rainy days a month on average, according to IPMA. In Barcelona, it is October, with 91 mm over about six days, according to AEMET. For an outdoor activity at those times, plan a covered fallback.

In Marrakech, the calendar matters more than the weather. High season runs from March to May and from September to November. In 2027, Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February, give or take a day depending on the moon sighting, and to last about a month: for teams based in France, it overlaps almost entirely with the winter school holidays of all three zones (6 February to 7 March 2027). Take this into account when choosing your dates.

Which documents do your participants need?

For Portugal and Spain, the French Foreign Ministry states that a valid passport or national ID card is enough for French citizens (its Portugal and Spain pages, in French, updated on 15 September 2026). One trap remains: French ID cards issued between 2004 and 2013 remain valid for five years beyond the printed date, but the ministry recommends travelling with a passport rather than a card that looks expired, as some airlines may refuse boarding on the return flight.

For Morocco, the French Foreign Ministry page is unambiguous: French citizens need a passport valid for the whole stay, an ID card alone is no longer accepted, and travellers must be able to show a return ticket and proof of sufficient funds.

In practice, ask every participant for their document type and expiry date at registration. For Marrakech, a new passport is not issued in a few days: check this at registration. Participants of other nationalities have different entry rules, to be checked one by one.

Euro or dirham: what difference does it make?

In Lisbon and Barcelona, none: the euro has been the currency of Portugal and Spain since 1999, in notes and coins since 2002. Quotes, invoices and participants’ expenses are in the same currency as your accounts.

In Morocco, the Foreign Exchange Office’s 2026 general instruction on foreign exchange sets a simple rule: importing and exporting dirhams is prohibited, except for travellers, up to 2,000 dirhams in banknotes. Foreign currency can be brought in freely; a customs declaration is compulsory from 100,000 dirhams. For participants to convert unspent dirhams back before leaving, they need to keep their exchange receipts. A practical tip: change small amounts as you go, which the Foreign Exchange Office expressly allows for non-residents.

For the company, the question is how to pay local suppliers: bank transfer, deposit, contract currency. Settle it in the contract, before the first payment.

Does the time difference get in the way of work?

Barcelona is on Paris time. Lisbon is one hour behind all year round, as Portugal changes its clocks on the same dates as France.

For Marrakech, the rule changed recently: under decree no. 2.26.530, Morocco returned to GMT on 20 September 2026 and dropped the GMT+1 regime adopted in 2018. There is therefore no longer a clock change during Ramadan. As a result, Marrakech is one hour behind Paris in winter and two hours behind in summer; it is level with London in winter and one hour behind in summer. Be wary of information published before that date, which often says there is “no time difference” with Paris in winter.

For a seminar, two hours’ difference in summer is enough to shift a video call with head office or a remote presentation. Set session times in local time and show head office time next to them in the programme.

Do you need special insurance?

According to France’s national health insurance, the European Health Insurance Card can be used in the European Union, the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom: it works in Portugal and Spain, not in Morocco. For Marrakech, check that every participant is covered for medical care and repatriation, either through the company policy or through dedicated travel insurance.

What about the budget?

We do not publish prices for Lisbon and Barcelona: we found no official source that would allow a fair comparison, and an unsourced figure would be worse than no figure at all. For Marrakech, our calculator puts a 40-person seminar, with two nights in a 4-star hotel, two working days with AV, two dinners and airport transfers, at €14,600 to €23,800, or about €360 to €600 per person, flights not included.

To compare the three cities, the only reliable method is to send each supplier the same brief, item by item: number of nights, hotel category, working days, meals, AV, transfers, and flights always shown separately. Also check that all amounts are presented the same way, excluding or including VAT. Our budget calculator lists the items in this order: it gives you a grid you can send as it is.

One last point before you cost it, for companies based in France: the destination changes nothing in the social security rules for a seminar. What matters to URSSAF is the share of work in the programme, as we explain in our article on company retreats abroad and benefits in kind.

How to choose, in one sentence

If your seminar fits into two days and your teams travel from several cities, choose Barcelona. If you want the Atlantic and just one hour’s time difference, with an ID card, choose Lisbon. If you are travelling between October and May and want to work and eat lunch in the sun, with a real change of scene, choose Marrakech, after checking passports and the Ramadan calendar.
