Team Building Activities in Marrakech Compared: Time, Size, Cost

In Marrakech, five team building activities can be costed without surprises: a rally through the medina, a craft workshop, a Moroccan cooking class, quad biking in the Agafay desert and a hot air balloon flight. For 20 participants, with local shuttles included, allow roughly €800 to €1,400 for the craft workshop, €900 to €1,400 for the rally, €1,200 to €1,900 for cooking, €1,700 to €2,400 for quad biking and €3,700 to €4,400 for the balloon. Price alone is not enough to choose, though. What decides is how much of the day the activity really takes, travel included, how many people it can handle at once, how physically demanding it is and the month you travel. Here are those four criteria side by side.

How long does each activity really take?

Catalogues give the length of the activity itself. For your programme, what matters is how long the group is unavailable, from leaving the hotel to getting back. The drive times below are calculated by car, without traffic, from Jemaa el-Fna square: a loaded coach takes longer, so treat them as minimums.

Activity Travel from the centre (car, no traffic) Time on site Place in the day
Rally or treasure hunt in the medina On foot or a few minutes by shuttle Depends on the scenario, often two to four hours Half a day
Craft workshop (pottery, weaving) In town Two to three hours for an introduction Half a day
Moroccan cooking class In town From one hour (express format) to three or four hours Half a day, meal included
Quad biking in Agafay Under an hour Two hours of riding A full half-day, often extended by dinner
Hot air balloon Hotel pick-up by the operator About 4 h 30 in total, including 40 to 60 minutes in the air The whole morning, leaving before dawn
Lalla Takerkoust lake About 40 minutes Quoted on request, depending on the activity At least half a day
Hiking around Imlil or in the Ourika valley (Setti Fatma) About 1 h 20 Quoted on request, depending on the route A full day

This has two consequences for your programme. First, the activities in town fit easily into the afternoon of a working day; quad biking can too, provided you accept that the plenary ends around midday. Second, hiking in the Atlas and the balloon flight cannot be slotted in between two sessions: the first takes the whole day, the second takes the morning and leaves you with a group that got up very early. A two-day seminar that wants both will have to give up half a day of work.

How many participants can each activity handle at once?

A capacity of “10 to 500 people” says nothing about how a group is rotated. The calculation is simple, and it changes how the day runs.

Cooking class: small groups in parallel

Cooking classes open to the public run in small groups, often eight to ten people per workshop: an order of magnitude, not a rule. For 20 participants you therefore need two to three workshops running in parallel; for 40, four to five; for 60, six to eight. That requires a venue able to set up that many stations at the same time, or else rotations, in which case part of the group waits or does something else. For a large group, ask the provider how many stations it can run simultaneously, not just its total capacity.

Quad biking: one machine for one or two people

Under operators’ terms, a quad takes two people at most. Twenty participants therefore means at least ten machines if everyone accepts being a passenger part of the time, and twenty if everyone wants to ride. For 60 people, the provider has to line up thirty to sixty quads, or send the group out in several waves: the half-day gets longer accordingly.

Hot air balloon: the operator’s capacity

A long-established Marrakech operator states on its website that it has 11 balloons and handles 480 passengers a day, across all customers. On paper, a group of 60 can therefore fly on the same morning, provided you book early and get it confirmed in writing, since you share that capacity with the day’s other passengers.

The rally: team size is your choice

The rally is the most flexible activity: it is the number of teams that adjusts. With teams of six, 30 participants make five teams and 100 make seventeen, with staggered starts so that teams do not crowd the same alleys. We go into this split in our article on the medina rally and treasure hunt.

Do participants need to be sporty?

For most activities, no. Cooking and crafts are done sitting or standing at a table, and put everyone on the same level, whatever their job title. The rally means walking for several hours through narrow streets, sometimes in the sun. The balloon flight takes no effort, but it means a very early start and 40 to 60 minutes standing in the basket. Quad biking means holding the handlebars on a stony track for two hours and, under operators’ terms, being at least 16. Hiking in the Atlas is the only truly physical activity on the list: how demanding it is depends entirely on the route chosen.

The right reflex is to state the level of each activity in the invitation, and to plan an alternative for those who cannot or do not want to take part: someone who does not want to ride can be a passenger, or join the group directly for dinner.

Which month for which activity?

Marrakech climate normals (Menara station, 1991-2020) give an average maximum of 23.6°C in March, 29.4°C in May, 37.7°C in July, 28.5°C in October and 19.1°C in January. INRS, the French occupational health and safety institute, uses 28°C for physical work and 30°C for sedentary work as prevention benchmarks. Put the two together and the rule follows: from May to October the average maximum is above 28°C, and from June to August it is above 33°C. In those months, the rally and quad biking belong in the morning or late afternoon, not between noon and 4 pm.

Indoor activities, cooking and crafts, work all year round as long as the room is air-conditioned in summer. The balloon flies in the morning by design, which protects it from the heat, but sunrise time varies a lot: around 5:30 in June and around 7:30 in January, Moroccan time. In winter, the same flight therefore takes place at an almost reasonable hour, with a start in the cold of dawn.

Rain, finally, is rare: 221 millimetres a year, and March is the wettest month, with about 35 millimetres on average. A rally in March needs a fallback version under cover, and quad biking a possible alternative date. The high season for seminars, March to May and then September to November, is also when every activity is practicable, which makes it the period when providers are busiest.

How much does each activity cost for 20 people?

The figures below come from our costing model, the same one as the seminar and team building budget calculator. They include 10% contingency and, except for the balloon, local shuttles for the day. They exclude flights, accommodation, alcohol, tourist tax and organisation fees.

Activity (20 participants) Total budget Per person
Craft workshop + shuttles €800 to €1,400 €40 to €70
Medina rally + shuttles €900 to €1,400 €40 to €70
Moroccan cooking class + shuttles €1,200 to €1,900 €60 to €100
Quad biking in Agafay, 2 hours + shuttles €1,700 to €2,400 €80 to €120
Sunrise hot air balloon flight €3,700 to €4,400 €190 to €220

Two remarks. The price of these activities is counted per participant: unlike a private evening event, it does not fall as the group grows. A balloon flight costs €190 to €220 per person whether you are 12 or 60. Next, our model has no dedicated line for transport to Agafay for quad biking on its own: we have approximated it with the day’s shuttles, and the provider’s quote will specify it. For the balloon, the operator collects passengers from their hotel.

For two activities in one day, the combination our calculator proposes by default, a rally in the morning and cooking in the afternoon for 40 people with shuttles, comes to about €3,700 to €5,900, or €90 to €150 per participant. Hiking, Lalla Takerkoust lake, golf, team olympics, escape games or the hammam are quoted on request: they are not in our costing model.

Which activity for which objective?

The choice becomes simpler when you start from what you expect from the day, rather than from the list of activities.

Onboarding newcomers or mixing departments. Cooking and crafts put everyone at the same table, with no advantage for the sportiest or the most senior. Working in small groups of eight to ten forces people to talk to colleagues they do not know.

Bringing a team back together after a reorganisation. The medina rally is the most revealing: time pressure and an unfamiliar setting force the team to organise itself, delegate and decide fast. The debrief afterwards matters as much as the game.

Rewarding a year’s work. The balloon flight and the desert evening are out of the ordinary enough to serve as a reward. They cost more and take more time: keep them for a smaller group or for the high point of a stay. Our articles on hot air ballooning for a company group and on team building in the Agafay desert go into detail.

Giving a team that already knows each other a challenge. Quad biking or hiking in the Atlas suit sporty teams looking for a physical challenge. For more ideas, see our guide to team building in Marrakech.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest team building activity in Marrakech?

The craft workshop and the medina rally: for 20 people, shuttles included, about €800 to €1,400 in total, or €40 to €70 per participant.

Can we do two activities on the same day?

Yes, if they take place in town: a rally in the morning and a cooking class in the afternoon, for example. Hiking in the Atlas and the balloon flight take a full day and a morning respectively, and combine poorly with anything else.

Which activity for a group of 100 people?

The rally, because you simply add teams and staggered starts. For cooking or quad biking, you have to multiply workshops or machines, which requires a provider able to run them all at the same time.

Can we hold a team building event in Marrakech in summer?

Yes, by adjusting the timing: from June to August, the average maximum is above 33°C. Workshops in air-conditioned rooms can run all day; the rally and quad biking early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

How much time should we allow for team building?

Half a day for an activity in town or quad biking, a full day for the Atlas. The most common formats run over two to three days, which leaves room to alternate work, activities and rest.
