Indoor Team Building in Marrakech: Winter and Rainy Days

Indoor team building in Marrakech is built around activities that take place entirely under cover: a Moroccan cooking workshop, a craft workshop, team challenges and quizzes in a hotel or riad function room. In winter it rarely rains, around three to five days a month from November to March on long-term averages, but nights drop to 6 to 11°C on average and the sun sets at around 5.30 pm in December. The smart approach is therefore not to move everything indoors, but to plan an outdoor programme with an indoor fallback ready in advance: who decides, by what time, and what needs to be booked twice. For a fully indoor day with local transport, our budget model gives roughly €1,800 to €2,900 for 30 people in a cooking workshop, and €4,800 to €7,700 for 80.

Does it really rain in Marrakech in winter?

Not much, but enough that a programme lasting several days should allow for it. The climate normals for the Marrakech-Menara station (1991-2020, NOAA data) give the picture. Sunset is calculated for Jemaa el-Fna square, on the 15th of each month, in Moroccan local time.

Month Average high Average low Rainfall Rainy days Sunset
November 23.1°C 10.7°C 29.8 mm 3.8 around 5.35 pm
December 20.1°C 7.3°C 24.2 mm 4.1 around 5.30 pm
January 19.1°C 5.9°C 25.0 mm 3.0 around 5.50 pm
February 20.7°C 7.6°C 25.7 mm 3.7 around 6.20 pm
March 23.6°C 10.3°C 35.2 mm 4.7 around 6.40 pm

Three things follow for your programme. First, rain is uncommon: about 19 rainy days on average across the five months, or roughly one day in eight. But it does happen, and March, the wettest month of the year, has close to five. On a three-day trip at this time of year, a wet day cannot be ruled out. Second, afternoons stay mild, around 19 to 24°C, while nights are cool: a terrace dinner in January needs a heated or enclosed venue. Third, the days are short: in December, an outdoor activity that starts at 3 pm needs to wrap up by around 5 pm, before dark and the drop in temperature.

Morocco stays on GMT all year round: in winter, Marrakech is on the same time as London and one hour behind Paris. In 2027, Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 or 9 February, with Eid al-Fitr around 9 or 10 March, give or take a day: dates to build into your planning, particularly for meal times.

Which activities take place entirely indoors?

A Moroccan cooking workshop

This is the most complete indoor activity: you cook a meal together, then share it. Workshops usually run in small groups, typically around eight to ten people each. For 30 participants, that means three to four workshops side by side; for 80, eight to ten. Ask the supplier how many stations it can set up at once, and in which room. A competitive version works well in winter: each team prepares a dish, a jury tastes, and the meal becomes the social high point of the day.

A craft workshop

Pottery, weaving or zellige tilework are done seated at a table, need no particular fitness and put everyone on an equal footing. They lend themselves to teamwork: each table makes one part of a shared piece. Our article on craft-based team building (in French) describes these workshops. Just check that the workshop you choose has an enclosed, heated room: not every small workshop does.

Challenges and quizzes in a hotel or riad room

A team quiz on Morocco or on your company, a building challenge with limited materials, a mystery to solve as a team, short rounds that move from table to table: these formats fit in a meeting room or lounge and work as well with 20 people as with 100. They are not in our budget model and are priced on request. Escape rooms and collaborative art projects belong to the same family; we cover them separately.

A covered version of the treasure hunt

A medina treasure hunt is not necessarily lost to the rain. Our guide to the medina treasure hunt describes a fallback version that tightens the route around covered stops, such as workshops, riad courtyards and shops, with shorter walks between them.

What kind of venue works for winter team building?

The venue matters more than the activity. A room that works in May can be unusable in January if it is not heated, or if it opens onto an open-air courtyard. Ask the venue four specific questions.

  • Is the workshop room heated, and separate from the plenary room?
  • In a riad, is the courtyard covered, or do you need another room in case of rain?
  • How many people does the room hold in workshop layout, with work tables?
  • Can dinner move indoors if the planned terrace is too cold?

A hotel covers the room, the catering and the fallback in one go; a riad suits small groups, provided it has enclosed rooms large enough. Our article on choosing a hotel or private estate for team building covers these criteria, fallback room included.

How do you build a plan B that actually works?

A plan B is not something you decide on the morning itself. It is set up when you agree the quote, with four elements.

Who decides

One person makes the call on the organising side, after consulting the supplier of the outdoor activity. For some activities the decision is not yours: one Marrakech balloon operator states that weather cancellations are decided by the operator, either the day before or on site. Also note who tells the participants, and through which channel.

When

Set a decision time, for example the evening before, with confirmation in the morning. Any later and switching becomes expensive: the coaches have left, the workshop has not set up its stations. Do not let the decision be made at the meeting point, in front of the group.

What needs to be booked twice

A plan B only exists if its room exists. Have the fallback room booked for the time slot of the outdoor activity, even if it ends up unused. There are two ways to set this up. The first: a replacement indoor activity, already booked. The second, often simpler: swap two days. If the cooking workshop was planned for the following day, you run it on the wet day and move the outdoor activity to the next. This second option requires both suppliers to accept some flexibility on dates, which you negotiate when you agree the quote.

What the contract says

Get it in writing what happens if the weather forces a cancellation: a new date, a refund, or an amount still payable. Terms vary from one supplier to another; the balloon operator mentioned above, for instance, offers a rebooking or a full refund when a flight is cancelled for weather. Also ask what the fallback room costs if it is not used, and until when you can release it. Our article on a rain plan for an outdoor wedding (in French) covers marquees and indoor fallbacks for an evening event.

How much does an indoor team building day cost?

The figures below come from the model behind our online calculator. They include local transport for the day and a 10% contingency, and exclude flights, accommodation, alcoholic drinks, tourist tax and planning fees.

Indoor day with local transport 30 people 80 people
Moroccan cooking workshop €1,800 to €2,900 (€60 to €100 per head) €4,800 to €7,700 (€60 to €100 per head)
Craft workshop €1,200 to €2,100 (€40 to €70 per head) €3,100 to €5,500 (€40 to €70 per head)
Craft in the morning, cooking in the afternoon €2,600 to €4,400 (€90 to €150 per head) €7,000 to €11,700 (€90 to €150 per head)

Workshops are priced per participant, so the cost per head does not fall as the group grows. Our model does not vary prices by season either. Winter is often easier for securing venues, especially from December to February: November and March are still high season. What you negotiate is the fallback room and flexibility on dates. For the opposite season, see our guide to summer team building in Marrakech, and for a full winter seminar with accommodation and working days, our article on winter corporate seminars (in French).

What Saphyyr Events does

Saphyyr Events has an office in Paris and an office in Marrakech. You plan the project with a single point of contact, in English or French, who coordinates venues, suppliers, catering and transfers. A team is on the ground all year round to visit venues and negotiate with suppliers, and on the day it stays on site from the morning until the last guest leaves. We prepare a free, detailed quote based on your project rather than a generic price. Flights are outside our scope: you book them yourself or through your travel agent.

Frequently asked questions

What is the wettest month in Marrakech?

March, with about 35 millimetres and close to five rainy days on average. It is also the start of high season, so a March programme should come with a fallback plan.

Is it cold in the evening in winter?

Average lows, reached overnight, range from about 6°C in January to 11°C in November. An outdoor dinner is possible at a heated venue; otherwise, plan an enclosed room.

Can we go quad biking or ballooning in winter?

Yes. Quad biking runs in the daytime, ideally with a fallback date in case of rain. Balloons take off at sunrise, around 7.30 am in January, and the operator calls off the flight if the weather does not allow it.

What indoor activity works for 80 people?

A cooking workshop split into eight to ten parallel sessions, or a team challenge in a large room. According to our model, the cooking workshop with transport comes to roughly €4,800 to €7,700 for 80 people.
