One-Day Team Building in Marrakech: 5 Formats, Schedule and Budget

A one-day team building in Marrakech is built around one or two activities, a meal taken together and the shuttles that connect them. Using the model behind our seminar and team building budget calculator, a common format, a treasure hunt in the medina in the morning followed by a Moroccan cooking workshop that doubles as lunch, comes to €94 to €146 per participant, shuttles and a 10% contingency included. A day that ends with a party at the hotel rises to €172 to €388 depending on group size. Here are five priced formats, the schedule we propose for each and the points to check before booking.

When is a single day enough?

Three situations lend themselves to it. The first is the seminar already in place: your team is in Marrakech for two or three working days and you set one day, or half a day, aside for the team. This is the simplest case: hotel, airport transfers and dinners are already organised, and the team building day is added to the programme. Our guide to a corporate retreat planning timeline shows where to fit it.

The second is the company based in Morocco, in Casablanca, Rabat or Marrakech itself, bringing a team together for the day. No flights or hotel to arrange, only shuttles and the programme.

The third is the group flying in for this one day. The flight takes a little over three hours from Paris and a little longer from London, and Morocco stays on GMT all year round. A same-day return is technically possible but leaves little time on the ground; in practice this format needs at least one night, and the prices on this page include neither flights nor accommodation. Our article on group flights to Marrakech covers seat blocks.

The five formats and their budget

The figures below come from our calculator’s model. They include the activities, shuttles where needed and a 10% contingency. They exclude flights, accommodation, alcoholic drinks and our planning fee.

Format Per person Total for 40
1. Medina treasure hunt + cooking workshop (lunch is the meal you cook), shuttles €94 to €146 €3,740 to €5,850
2. Craft workshop + medina treasure hunt, shuttles €72 to €119 €2,860 to €4,750
3. Half-day quad biking in the Agafay desert (2 h riding), shuttles €83 to €119 €3,300 to €4,750
4. Sunrise hot-air balloon + cooking workshop €237 to €297 €9,460 to €11,880
5. Format 1 + evening at the hotel with dinner and DJ €172 to €388
depending on group size
€7,260 to €12,560

Formats 1 to 4 keep the same price per person from 20 to 60 participants: format 1, for example, comes to €1,870 to €2,930 for 20 people and €5,610 to €8,780 for 60. Format 5 comes to €4,180 to €7,770 for 20 people (€209 to €388 per person) and €10,340 to €17,360 for 60 (€172 to €289).

Two things to read in this table. First, the first four formats cost the same per person whatever the group size, because every line in the model is counted per participant. Second, format 5 gets cheaper per head as the group grows: the hotel’s private space and the DJ are flat fees spread over more guests. The balloon is a case apart: at €170 to €200 per passenger in the model, it costs roughly as much on its own as the other four activities combined.

What the model does not price, and what we quote separately: lunch in a restaurant instead of the cooking workshop (dinner, by contrast, is counted at €25 to €45 per person), a professional host for a custom treasure hunt, a debriefing room, a photographer. To compare the activities themselves, real duration and group capacity included, read our comparison of team building activities in Marrakech. If you start from a fixed budget per person, our team building on a budget shows what €100, €150 or €200 per person buys.

Sample schedule: the treasure hunt and cooking day

This is format 1, which suits groups of twenty to sixty. The times assume the group sleeps in town; from the Palmeraie or a hotel on the Ourika road, add twenty to thirty minutes of shuttle to each move.

Time Sequence Worth knowing
9:00 Welcome, coffee, teams formed Teams of six: 30 participants make five teams, 60 make ten
9:30 Shuttle to the medina One drop-off point, one precise meeting point at the end
10:00 to 12:30 Treasure hunt through the souks Starts staggered by a few minutes so teams do not crowd the same alleys
12:45 Arrival at the cooking workshop, in town Eight to ten people per station: 40 participants need four to five parallel workshops
13:00 to 15:30 Cooking, then lunch around the dishes prepared The meal is part of the activity, no restaurant to book
16:00 Back to the hotel, debrief or free time The hunt results are announced here or at dinner

For the half-day quad (format 3), departure is around 14:00: under an hour’s drive to Agafay, two hours of riding, back in town around 18:30. A quad carries two people at most; twenty participants mean ten to twenty machines, and above forty the operator sends the group out in waves. For the balloon (format 4), the operator collects the group at the hotel before dawn, about an hour before sunrise, which is around 5:30 in June and 7:30 in January, for about 4 h 30 in all including 40 to 60 minutes in the air; the cooking workshop then follows at lunchtime. Our pages on the medina treasure hunt for teams, the group cooking class, quad and buggy for groups and the hot-air balloon for company groups detail each activity.

Which format for which team?

The treasure hunt and the workshops put everyone on the same footing: you walk, you cook, you shape clay, and your job title gives no advantage. That makes them the right choice for a team mixed in age and fitness, or for a first day together. The treasure hunt does involve several hours on foot through narrow streets, sometimes in the sun; plan an alternative for anyone who cannot keep up, such as going straight to the cooking workshop.

Quad biking suits a team that wants adrenaline and does not mind the dust; anyone who prefers not to drive can ride as a passenger. The balloon is for a group that wants a memorable moment and accepts a very early start; it takes no effort, but 40 to 60 minutes standing in the basket.

Format 5, with its party, makes sense when the day is the high point of a trip: year end, integrating an acquired team, a target reached. For a group that works the next morning, an evening ending at midnight or 1 a.m., when amplified music stops in most Marrakech venues, is still compatible with a 9 a.m. plenary.

Which month?

Marrakech’s climate normals give an average maximum of 23.6 °C in March, 29.4 °C in May, 37.7 °C in July, 28.5 °C in October and 19.1 °C in January. France’s occupational health institute, INRS, uses 28 °C as the threshold for physical activity. In other words, the treasure hunt on foot and afternoon quad biking are best scheduled from October to May; from June to September, we flip the day, outdoor activity in the morning, air-conditioned workshop in the afternoon, or choose an all-indoor format. Our article on team building in Marrakech in the summer heat gives the adapted timings.

High season runs from March to May and September to November: cooking schools and quad operators are in heavy demand at weekends and the best slots go several weeks ahead. For a group of more than forty, allow one to two months to secure enough parallel workshops or enough quads.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a one-day team building in Marrakech cost?

With our calculator’s model, €72 to €146 per participant for a day with two activities in town and shuttles, €83 to €119 for a half day of quad biking in Agafay, €237 to €297 with a hot-air balloon, and €172 to €388 for a day extended by a hotel party with DJ. Flights, accommodation and alcoholic drinks are not included.

Can we do two activities in the same day?

Yes, if one of them takes place in town. Treasure hunt in the morning and cooking workshop at lunchtime is the simplest combination; quad biking takes a full half day, the balloon the whole morning. A hike in the Atlas takes the entire day and cannot be combined.

What is the maximum group size for one day?

The treasure hunt scales by adding teams and staggering starts. Cooking workshops run in parallel at eight to ten people each, which requires a large enough venue: above sixty participants we split the group across two venues or two slots. For quads, above forty the group goes out in waves.

Do participants need to be fit?

Not for cooking or crafts. The treasure hunt means several hours of walking, quad biking means driving a machine on a track, the balloon means getting up before dawn. We state the level of each activity in the invitation and plan an alternative for every participant.

How far ahead should we book?

Three to four weeks is enough for a group of twenty outside high season. In March to May and September to November, or for more than forty people, allow one to two months.
