Engagement Party in Marrakech: Planning the Reception and Budget

To organise an engagement party in Marrakech, four decisions frame the whole project: the format (dinner in a private riad, a villa with a garden, a rooftop in town or a camp in the Agafay desert), the guest list, the date, and how to welcome two families who sometimes come from two different countries. A private riad seats twenty to fifty people; above that, a villa or estate takes over. For thirty guests in a riad, with dinner, a cake, flowers and a musician, allow €4,025 to €19,160, with the venue hire accounting for most of that spread. On timing, six to eight weeks is enough for a dinner with no accommodation to arrange; three to six months is needed as soon as guests are flying in from several countries. This guide covers the formats, the budget for 30 and 60 guests, a short planning timeline and what an “engagement package” should include.

This is about the party that brings family and friends together, not the proposal itself. If you are planning a surprise proposal, our guide to a surprise proposal in the Agafay desert (in French) and our pick of proposal spots in Marrakech (in French) are a better place to start.

Which format suits the party?

The right format depends less on looks than on guest numbers, how late you want to finish and where your guests are sleeping.

Dinner in a private riad

This is the usual choice for a party of a manageable size: a courtyard, a roof terrace and often rooms for parents or close friends. A riad comfortably seats twenty to fifty, more for a standing reception. Two constraints: the medina lanes are closed to cars, so guests have to be walked in and out, and amplified sound often stops between midnight and 1 am, out of consideration for the neighbours.

A villa or estate with a garden

Once the list passes fifty, or when both families want the evening to run on, a villa makes more sense: garden, pool, parking and more freedom over timing. The trade-off is logistics, with shuttles from town, and permission for amplified music, which is requested from the local council or the prefecture.

A rooftop or restaurant in town

When guests are already staying in different places, a private rooftop or restaurant room keeps things simple: no accommodation to manage and an address everyone can reach by taxi. The menu and closing time are the venue’s, so get both confirmed in writing.

A camp in the Agafay desert

Under an hour’s drive away, Agafay gives you a setting with no neighbours. On the other hand, everyone has to be driven out and back, you need to check the power available for light and sound, with a generator if it falls short, and braziers are a must once night falls in winter.

For a detailed comparison of these venues, with capacities and conditions, see our guide to hiring a party venue in Marrakech (in French). The same rules apply to a private party in Marrakech.

Two families, sometimes two countries: what should you plan for?

An engagement party can bring together two families who barely know each other, and sometimes two languages. Rather than improvising, a few points are worth settling early.

  • Language: a running order, speeches and a welcome designed so everyone follows what is happening. Our teams work in English and French.
  • Arrivals: relatives landing at different times from several cities need transfers organised flight by flight.
  • Documents: each guest checks the entry requirements for their own nationality. For French citizens, for example, Morocco requires a passport valid for the whole stay, and a national ID card alone is no longer accepted, according to the French Foreign Ministry (page in French).
  • Time difference: Morocco is on GMT all year round, the same time as London in winter and one hour behind in summer, and one hour behind Paris in winter, two in summer.
  • Each family’s expectations: what each side expects from the evening, dietary needs, the place of music. Ask both families before choosing the venue.

When the two families have different traditions, the running order should make room for both. Our articles on multicultural weddings in Morocco (in French) and Franco-Moroccan weddings (in French) offer ideas that work just as well for an engagement party.

What does an engagement party cost for 30 or 60 guests?

We start from the figures we publish for private parties in Marrakech: a celebration dinner at €60 to €120 per person, a bespoke cake at €25 to €60, flowers at €50 to €200 for a courtyard or a table, a solo Gnawa musician at €150 to €300, a five-piece group at 8,000 to 15,000 dirhams, and hire of a whole riad at €2,000 to €15,000 per day.

Item 30 guests, seated dinner in a riad 60 guests, standing reception in a riad
Riad hire €2,000 to €15,000 €2,000 to €15,000
Celebration dinner (€60 to €120 per person) €1,800 to €3,600 €3,600 to €7,200
Bespoke cake €25 to €60 €25 to €60
Flowers €50 to €200 €50 to €200
Music (solo Gnawa musician) €150 to €300 €150 to €300
Total €4,025 to €19,160 €5,825 to €22,760

The sum for 30 guests: 2,000 + 1,800 + 25 + 50 + 150 = €4,025 at the low end, and 15,000 + 3,600 + 60 + 200 + 300 = €19,160 at the top, or roughly €134 to €639 per guest. For 60 guests, with exactly the same items: 2,000 + 3,600 + 25 + 50 + 150 = €5,825, and 15,000 + 7,200 + 60 + 200 + 300 = €22,760, or roughly €97 to €379 per guest. The total rises with the guest list, but the cost per head falls, because the venue hire is shared between more people.

Why such a wide range? Because hiring a whole riad runs from €2,000 to €15,000 per day depending on season and the services included. Of the €15,135 between the bottom and the top of the range for 30 guests, €13,000 comes from that one line. It is close to half the total at the low end and close to 80% at the top: the choice of riad and date is what sets the budget.

Two possible adjustments. Sixty seated guests is more than a riad usually holds, hence the standing reception in this sum; for a seated dinner for 60 you need a villa or estate, priced on request, which then replaces the riad hire line. And if you would rather have a five-piece group than a soloist, swap the music line for 8,000 to 15,000 dirhams in both cases.

Left out of these sums are flights, which each guest books themselves or through a travel agent, and accommodation, from €50 to over €350 per night per property, from a simple riad room to a villa. A DJ, a full sound system or a photographer are priced on request. The morning after, a hammam with massage costs between €30 and €60 per person, and an airport transfer by official taxi around 70 to 150 dirhams.

What does the planning timeline look like?

An engagement party comes together faster than a wedding, but the same steps come up. Here is a typical timeline, to be shortened for a dinner with no accommodation to arrange.

When What
3 to 6 months ahead Date, guest numbers, budget; venue choice if guests are coming from several countries or you are aiming for spring or autumn
6 to 8 weeks ahead Venue confirmed for a simple dinner; caterer, flowers and music booked; invitations sent
30 days ahead Permission filed with the prefecture above 100 guests, where required
15 days ahead The same below 100 guests; final list of arrivals and transfers
The final week Timed running order, seating plan, supplier briefing
On the day Set-up, welcome, service, speeches, guest departures

Two calendar points are worth checking before you fix the date. March to May and September to November are the high season, when venues are booked earlier. And Ramadan changes opening hours and alcohol service: in 2027 it is expected to begin around 8 February, give or take a day, with Eid al-Fitr, a public holiday in Morocco, expected around 9 March, again give or take a day.

What should an engagement package include?

A package is only worth something if it states exactly what it covers. Before comparing it with another, check that each line appears with a quantity.

  • The venue, with written timings: arrival time, sound cut-off and finishing time.
  • Dinner, with the number of covers and the menu.
  • Flowers, music and cake, each on its own line.
  • Coordination on the night, with the name of the person who will be there.
  • Transfers and shuttles, if any, with times.

A package should also say what it leaves out. Flights are never in it: you book them yourself or through your travel agent. Guest accommodation, drinks, a photographer or a DJ are often handled separately; if they appear nowhere, ask in writing. As for alcohol, it is served at venues that hold the necessary licence or through an authorised supplier, which needs checking venue by venue.

What Saphyyr Events does

Saphyyr Events is a French-Moroccan agency with an office in Paris and an office in Marrakech. We organise private receptions: you plan yours with us remotely, in English or French, with a single point of contact for the venue, catering, décor, music, accommodation and transfers. A team is on the ground all year round to visit venues and negotiate with suppliers, and on the day from morning until the last guest leaves. Rather than an indicative price, we prepare a free, detailed quote based on your actual plans. Many of our clients only travel to Marrakech for the event itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can the proposal and the party happen on the same weekend?

Yes, as long as the proposal stays secret and the party is prepared separately, with guests briefed by the planner rather than by you. Both moments then fit into a single running order.

Do I need to visit Marrakech to plan the engagement party?

No. We plan the project with you remotely and our team visits venues locally. Many of our clients see the venue for the first time the day before their party.

When is the best time of year?

Spring and autumn give the most comfortable conditions for an evening outdoors. Winter is mild by day but nights are cool, with an average low of 5.9°C in January; summer means moving the party to the end of the day.

Can the same agency plan the wedding afterwards?

Yes. We also organise weddings in Marrakech, with the same method and a single point of contact; our wedding in Marrakech page sets out the formats and steps.
