A well-tested way to entertain a birthday party in Marrakech is a three-part evening: Gnaoua music as guests arrive, a quieter dinner, then a DJ to finish the night. On cost, a solo Gnaoua musician is €150 to €300 for the evening, a five-piece Gnaoua group 8,000 to 15,000 dirhams, a DJ €500 to €1,200, and professional dancers €400 to €1,200 per performance. The venue decides the rest: in a riad, the music often has to stop between midnight and 1 am. Below is the full price list, three timed running orders for 20, 50 and 100 guests, and how far ahead to book.
How much does birthday entertainment cost?
The prices below are the ones we publish in our guide to organising an evening with performers in Marrakech (in French) and on our birthday page. Amounts in dirhams are given as they are, without conversion, because the exchange rate moves.
| Entertainment | Price | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Solo Gnaoua musician | €150 to €300 | for a birthday evening |
| Five-piece Gnaoua group | 8,000 to 15,000 DH | a set lasts 45 minutes to an hour; two sets if they open the evening and come back later |
| Professional DJ | €500 to €1,200 | our calculator’s range; ask what sound equipment is included |
| Band of four to twelve musicians | 10,700 to 26,750 DH | Arab-Andalusian for dinner, chaabi for dancing; needs breaks |
| Professional dancers | €400 to €1,200 | per performance |
| Master of ceremonies | 2,000 to 5,000 DH | useful above 150 guests |
| Upgraded sound system | 3,000 to 8,000 DH | outdoors or in a room over 300 m² |
| Tips | 100 to 300 DH | per performer |
| Fire show | on quotation | depends on the venue, which decides what may be lit |
Two things to bear in mind before choosing. Many “all-in” DJ quotes only cover up to 150 people indoors: beyond that, or outside, add the upgraded sound line. And a DJ can hold the dance floor without a break, whereas a band needs pauses, which is why the two are so often combined.
What running order works for 20, 50 or 100 guests?
Guest numbers change more than the budget: they change the pace of the evening. For twenty people, one act is enough; for a hundred, you need sequences that hand over to each other without dead time. The three running orders below are examples, to be adjusted to the finishing time written into the venue’s contract. For the overall planning, see our guide to hiring a private party planner in Marrakech.
20 guests in a riad: one musician, then a playlist
A solo Gnaoua musician welcomes guests in the courtyard over drinks. Dinner follows with background music on compact speakers, then the speeches and the cake, and dancing until the riad’s cut-off time.
- 7.30 pm: guests arrive, guembri in the courtyard.
- 8.30 pm: dinner.
- 10 pm: speeches, then the cake, with the music off.
- 10.30 pm: playlist and dancing until the time set by the riad, often midnight.
The sum: €150 to €300 for the musician, plus a tip of 100 to 300 DH.
50 guests in a villa: a Gnaoua group, then a DJ
This is a common sequence, borrowed from weddings and corporate evenings: the Gnaoua group for the arrival, the DJ for the rest of the night. A villa has room for a proper dance floor.
- 7.30 pm: welcome by the Gnaoua group, 45 minutes to an hour.
- 8.30 pm: dinner, with soft music from the DJ.
- 10 pm: speeches and cake, music off and lights down.
- 10.30 pm: the DJ opens the dance floor until the contracted finishing time.
The sum: 8,000 to 15,000 DH for the group plus €500 to €1,200 for the DJ. Add 100 to 300 DH in tips for each of the six performers, or 600 to 1,800 DH, and you reach 8,600 to 16,800 DH, plus €500 to €1,200 for the DJ.
100 guests in a villa or the desert: three acts
With a hundred guests, add a strong act halfway through to lift the room after dinner: dancers, or a fire show if the venue allows it.
- 7.30 pm: welcome by the Gnaoua group.
- 8.30 pm: dinner.
- 10 pm: speeches and cake.
- 10.15 pm: the dancers.
- 10.45 pm: the DJ takes over until the end.
The sum, outdoors: Gnaoua group 8,000 to 15,000 DH and upgraded sound 3,000 to 8,000 DH, which makes 11,000 to 23,000 DH, plus the DJ at €500 to €1,200 and €400 to €1,200 for the dancers and the tips. If you would rather have a band than the Gnaoua group, replace the first line with 10,700 to 26,750 DH. A master of ceremonies, at 2,000 to 5,000 DH, becomes useful from 150 guests.
What works in a riad, a villa or Agafay?
The same programme is not set up the same way everywhere. Before booking a performer, check that the venue can take them.
The riad. Electrical supply is often limited to 10 to 20 amps, there is no socket in the middle of the courtyard and sound bounces off the walls. Compact speakers and battery-powered lights are the norm, and a band, which needs a stage of 20 to 40 m², does not always fit. Above all, many riads and estates in central Marrakech cut amplified sound between midnight and 1 am, some as early as 11 pm. Have that time written into the contract before you book anyone.
The villa. It brings space, parking and the freedom to play music later. A villa with amplified music or a large crowd may still need permission from the local authority or the prefecture, so check before you sign.
The Agafay desert. Power depends on the camp: ask what supply is available, bring in a generator if it is not enough, and size the sound system for open ground. A fire show is one of the acts offered with desert packages, and there are no neighbours to worry about.
Fire, fireworks and lanterns: what is allowed
For a fire show with performers, the venue has the final say on what may be lit on its grounds: ask in writing before you book. We have no published price for this kind of act; it is quoted case by case.
Fireworks are another matter. In Morocco, entertainment fireworks are regulated by Law No. 22-16 on explosives for civil use, published in 2018. Do not set anything off yourselves: hand it to a qualified professional, with the venue’s written agreement, and have the venue and the authorities confirm the procedure before mentioning it to guests. Sky lanterns, lasers or light fountains: get the venue’s written agreement too. For the alternatives, see our guide to fireworks in Morocco and the legal alternatives (in French).
What if children are coming?
An adult party with children works best in a villa, with two separate areas: the children’s activities on one side of the garden, the adults’ table on the other. Activities depend on age: short slots of fifteen to twenty minutes for three- to six-year-olds (face painting, puppets, magic), a running theme such as a treasure hunt for seven- to eleven-year-olds, and teenage formats beyond that. Our guide to children’s birthday parties in Marrakech (in French) covers timings, pool supervision and food. If the party follows a thirteen-year-old’s bar mitzvah, see our guide to a bar mitzvah in Marrakech.
How far ahead should you book performers?
Good performers are booked early, especially in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Allow at least three months for a Gnaoua group, four to six months for a well-known DJ, and six to eight months for a band in high season. If the evening needs heavier technical kit, sound and lighting companies ask for two to three months’ notice.
A fortnight before, share the timed running order with the venue, the caterer, the photographer and every performer, marking the moments when the music must stop: speeches, cake. The day before, half an hour of sound check on site prevents most problems. If the party is the centrepiece of a whole weekend, our guide to a 40th or 50th birthday weekend in Marrakech sets out the budget for the other days.
What Saphyyr does
We select the performers — DJs, Gnaoua musicians, dancers — negotiate with them and sign the contracts on your behalf. We write the timed running order — when the cake comes out, the speeches, the photographer’s slot, the change of musical mood — and brief everyone before you arrive. On the night, our team is on site from set-up until the last guest leaves. You plan everything remotely, in English or French, with a single point of contact.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a Gnaoua musician for a birthday party?
A solo musician costs €150 to €300 for the evening. A five-piece group is 8,000 to 15,000 dirhams: a different price bracket, and a very different presence in the room.
How late can the music go on?
In many riads and estates in the city centre, amplified sound stops between midnight and 1 am, sometimes at 11 pm. In an isolated villa or in the desert, the party can run later. Either way, the time should be in the contract.
DJ or live band?
Both, if the budget allows: the band for the guests’ arrival, the DJ for the dance floor. On a tighter budget, a DJ plus a solo Gnaoua musician over drinks already gives you an evening in two parts.
Do you need a master of ceremonies?
Not for a dinner of twenty or fifty: a written running order shared with everyone is enough. Above 150 guests, a master of ceremonies, at 2,000 to 5,000 dirhams, avoids dead time between sequences.
Can you have a fire show in a riad?
The venue decides what may be lit on its grounds, and the answer varies from one address to the next. A fire show is one of the acts offered with desert packages. Whatever the venue, get its written agreement before booking the performer.
