Hot Air Balloon in Marrakech for Company Groups: Timing, Safety

A hot air balloon flight in Marrakech for a company group takes up a whole morning: one long-established operator gives an average total duration of 4 h 30, including 40 to 60 minutes in the air, with hotel pick-up before sunrise. Depending on the month, the alarm therefore goes off between 4:00 and 6:00. The budget does not depend on group size: our costing model counts €190 to €220 per participant, contingency included, or about €2,200 to €2,600 for 12 people and €11,200 to €13,200 for 60. Two points deserve your attention before booking: the pilot can cancel the flight because of the weather, which means building a fallback slot into the programme, and, according to the Moroccan press, several operators were sanctioned in 2025, which calls for a few checks.

What time do you need to get up?

Flights take place only in the morning, at sunrise, “to be completely safe”, says the operator quoted here. Sunrise time varies by two hours between winter and summer: around 7:30 in January, around 5:30 in June, Moroccan time. Operators do not publish an exact pick-up time; in the table below, we have placed it one hour before sunrise, and the return to the hotel 4 h 30 later. This is a working assumption, to be confirmed by the operator you choose.

Month Sunrise (15th) Hotel pick-up (assumption) Back at the hotel (around)
January 7:32 6:30 11:00
February 7:15 6:15 10:45
March 6:44 5:45 10:15
April 6:05 5:00 9:30
May 5:36 4:30 9:00
June 5:26 4:30 9:00
July 5:37 4:30 9:00
August 5:57 5:00 9:30
September 6:15 5:15 9:45
October 6:34 5:30 10:00
November 7:00 6:00 10:30
December 7:24 6:30 11:00

Sunrise times are calculated for Marrakech, to within two minutes, in Moroccan legal time, which has stayed on GMT all year round since 20 September 2026: one hour behind Paris in winter, two hours behind in summer, and the same as London in winter.

Three consequences for your programme. The evening before, dinner must end early: a DJ evening until midnight followed by a 4:00 alarm produces an exhausted group. There is no need to plan breakfast at the hotel: with the operator quoted here, it is served after landing, under a tent. Finally, from May to August, the group is back between 9:00 and 9:30 and can resume a work session in the late morning, whereas in winter the whole morning is taken.

What should participants wear?

At departure time, the temperature is close to the day’s minimum. In Marrakech, the average minimum is about 6°C in January, 10°C in March, 15°C in May, 18°C in June, 19°C in September and 11°C in November. From October to April, bring a warm jacket and a layer you can take off after sunrise; in summer, a single layer is enough at departure. Closed shoes are better, because the transfer to the launch site is partly on dirt tracks, and pick-up after landing is by 4×4. Include this in the joining instructions sent the day before.

What happens if the flight is cancelled?

A balloon flight depends on the wind. With the long-established operator we quote, only the pilots can decide to cancel, either the day before, when the forecast is reliable, or on site, when ground conditions do not allow take-off. In both cases, the operator offers to reschedule the flight or refunds it in full. It says it flies on average 350 days a year: cancellation is unlikely, but not ruled out. Its terms also state that no flight takes place in Marrakech during a royal visit.

The other way round, if you cancel less than 24 hours before the flight, or if a participant is missing at pick-up time, the full amount remains due. For a group, this means fixing the passenger list two days before at the latest, and warning participants that anyone who fails to turn up will be charged.

The scheduling rule that follows is simple: never put the balloon flight on the last morning of the stay. Put it on the first possible morning, and keep a second morning free for a rescheduled flight. If the flight goes ahead as planned, that fallback slot becomes a work session or free time.

Are hot air balloons in Marrakech safe?

The question comes up in searches, often alongside the word “accident”. We found no official source that records accidents. The most documented case of recent years, in May 2025, is not about an accident but about regulatory breaches. According to the Moroccan press (le360, Hespress), an airline captain reported balloons at a prohibited altitude in the approach path of Marrakech-Menara airport, and the Ministry of Transport and Logistics then sanctioned several balloon companies in the region, with suspensions or withdrawals of authorisation depending on the case. The articles do not name the companies concerned and their figures do not match: we only take away the principle.

On that occasion, the ministry announced tighter oversight of the activity, covering in particular, according to the press, maximum altitude, radio equipment on board and prior notification of flights. For an employer sending staff up in a basket, this translates into four questions to put to the operator, with the answers in writing:

  1. Do you hold a currently valid operating authorisation, and for which flight area?
  2. How do you apply the rules tightened in 2025 on altitude, radio and flight notification?
  3. What insurance covers passengers, and can you send us the certificate?
  4. What is your cancellation policy, on your side and on ours?

The flight area also deserves a check: an authorisation covers a specific area, and launch areas vary from one operator to another. Ask which area the authorisation you are shown is valid for, and check that it matches the flight you are being offered. Finally, ask about the operator’s own conditions for the participants concerned: age, pregnancy, reduced mobility.

How many participants can fly at the same time?

The long-established operator we quote states on its website that it has 11 balloons and handles 480 passengers a day, across all customers. On paper, a group of 60 participants can therefore fly on the same morning, provided you book early enough and get it confirmed in writing, since you share that capacity with the day’s other passengers, especially in high season, March to May and September to November. Ask whether your group will fly in baskets reserved for your participants only or mixed with other passengers: for team building, the point is to share the experience with colleagues.

What budget for a group?

Our costing model, the same as the online calculator, counts the sunrise balloon flight at €170 to €200 per participant before contingency. Unlike a private evening event, there is no fixed cost to spread: the price per person stays the same whatever the size of the group.

Scenario Total budget Per person
Executive committee, 12 participants, flight only €2,200 to €2,600 €190 to €220
Team of 60 participants, flight only €11,200 to €13,200 €190 to €220
30-participant stay: 2 nights in a 4-star hotel, 1 working day, 2 dinners, balloon flight, airport transfers €14,700 to €21,700 €490 to €720

In the 30-person stay, the balloon flight accounts for €5,100 to €6,000 before contingency, roughly a third of the budget. These figures include 10% contingency and exclude air travel, alcohol, tourist tax and organisation fees. Our comparison of team building activities in Marrakech sets the balloon against the time each activity takes and its cost.

The price explains why balloon flights are often kept for a small group: an executive committee or a team being rewarded. Our article on the executive leadership offsite in Marrakech shows how to fit it into a twelve-person format.
