A seminar in Marrakech starts on a map. Within 5 km of the airport, three districts share the city: Hivernage and its large hotels, Gueliz the modern town, and the medina with its riads. Ten kilometres further north, the Palmeraie lines up resorts, golf courses and private estates. At 30 to 40 km, the Agafay desert and Lake Lalla Takerkoust; at 35 to 65 km, the Atlas valleys. Each area sets its own pace, group sizes and transfers. Here is how to choose, with distances, venue types, pitfalls and a costed budget for 30 people.

## The six areas in one table

| Area | From the airport | Venue types | Usual group size |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hivernage | 3 km, 10 to 15 min | 4- and 5-star hotels with meeting rooms, congress centre | 20 to over 1,000 |
| Gueliz | 4 km, 10 to 15 min | Business hotels, meeting rooms, restaurants and rooftops | 10 to 200 |
| Medina | 5 km, 15 to 25 min then on foot | Private riads, palaces, restaurants | 8 to 50 residential, more for an evening |
| Palmeraie | 11 km, 20 to 30 min | Resorts, golf courses, estates and private villas | 10 to 300 |
| Agafay and Lake Takerkoust | 30 to 40 km, 45 min to 1 h | Desert camps, lakeside lodges | 20 to 300 for an evening, fewer overnight |
| Atlas (Ourika, Imlil) | 35 to 65 km, 45 min to 1 h 30 | Kasbahs, ecolodges, mountain inns | 10 to 60 |

Airport distances are great-circle for the city districts and by road for Agafay, the lake and the Atlas; times are for a car outside rush hour. A coach is slower and cannot enter the medina.

## Hivernage: the district of the large hotels

This is the simplest area for a working seminar. Hivernage hotels were built for it: plenary rooms, breakout rooms, group restaurants, coach parking, and the Palais des Congrès within walking distance, with its auditorium of about 1,500 seats. The airport is ten minutes away, Jemaa el-Fna square about twenty minutes on foot or five by taxi. Everything happens on site, with no shuttle: that is the decisive argument for a packed programme or a group of more than 100.

The trade-off is the setting. A Hivernage hotel looks like a good conference hotel; the change of scenery will come from the evening, not the meeting room. For a large event, our guide to a [conference for 300 to 1,000 delegates](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/conference-convention-marrakech-300-1000-delegates) covers venues and logistics.

## Gueliz: the modern town, for going out at night

Gueliz is Marrakech’s modern centre: avenues, offices, cafés, restaurants, rooftops. It has business hotels and mid-sized meeting rooms, and above all a neighbourhood life that lets you give participants a free evening without organising a shuttle. For a one-day meeting without accommodation, or a team of 10 to 40 who like to pick their own dinner, it is the most practical area. Our page on [seminar venues in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/seminar-venues-in-marrakech) compares the formats.

## The medina: riads, for a small group

The medina is the reason people come to Marrakech, and the most demanding area for an organiser. Vehicles stop at the gates: the last stretch is on foot, with luggage carried on handcarts. A riad rarely sleeps more than about twenty and seats twenty to fifty at dinner; for a leadership team or a small group, taking over a whole riad creates a working bubble no hotel can match. Count €2,000 to €15,000 a day to privatise a riad, depending on its size and standard. Our guide to a [corporate retreat in a riad](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-retreat-riad-marrakech) covers capacities, access and pitfalls.

For an evening, the medina’s palaces and restaurants take much larger groups: a gala dinner for 150 guests in a privatised venue is the format of our [corporate gala dinner in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-gala-dinner-marrakech) page. Two city rules to know: amplified music outdoors is generally cut between midnight and 1 am, and a gathering of more than 100 people is declared to the prefecture 30 days ahead, 15 days below that.

## The Palmeraie: resorts, golf and villas

Some ten kilometres north-east of the centre, the Palmeraie is an area of large estates: resorts with seminar rooms, golf hotels, private villas with pools. You go there for a quiet residential retreat where everything happens inside the grounds: work in the morning, pool or golf in the afternoon, dinner on site. The constraint is the transfer: 20 to 30 minutes to reach the medina, and a shuttle for every outing. For a private villa, see our guide to a [corporate retreat in a private villa](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-retreat-private-villa-marrakech); for golf, our article on a [golf incentive retreat](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/golf-incentive-corporate-retreat-marrakech).

## Agafay and Lake Takerkoust: the evening out of town

The Agafay desert begins 30 to 40 km south-west of Marrakech, 45 minutes to an hour by road, with a track at the end. It is a stone desert, not sand dunes: tented camps, sunset dinners, campfires, quad biking by day. An evening there with a return to town for the night is the usual pattern; a night under canvas is possible for a group that wants the full experience. Lake Lalla Takerkoust, also 30 to 40 km away, offers a different setting: a reservoir at the foot of the Atlas, lodges with pools, water sports.

Two pitfalls: the evening cold in winter, sharper than in town, which calls for braziers and blankets; and the transfer, which turns a three-hour evening into a five-hour outing. Our guide to a [corporate event in the Agafay desert](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-event-agafay-desert) details the running order and camp privatisation prices.

## The Atlas: Ourika and Imlil, for switching off

At 35 km for the mouth of the Ourika valley and 65 km for Imlil, or 45 minutes to 1 h 30 by road, the Ourika valley and the village of Imlil, at the foot of Mount Toubkal, offer kasbahs and ecolodges for groups of 10 to 60. You go there for hiking, silence and a real break, not for a 200-person plenary. The transfer, by minibus rather than coach, takes half a day there and back: keep this area for a stay of three nights or more, or for a day trip from the city, as in our guide to [day trips from Marrakech for corporate groups](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/day-trips-from-marrakech-corporate-groups).

## How much does the seminar cost by area?

Our calculator does not distinguish districts but hotel categories, and that is what changes from one area to the next. For 30 participants, two nights in single rooms, two working days with AV, two dinners and airport transfers, the model gives, with a 10% contingency:

| Formula | Typical area | Total | Per person |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 4-star hotel | Hivernage, Gueliz | €11,088 – €18,216 | €370 – €607 |
| Riads at room rates, with local shuttles (no exclusive use) | Medina | €11,088 – €19,074 | €370 – €636 |
| 5-star hotel | Hivernage, Palmeraie | €17,358 – €28,446 | €579 – €948 |

Taking a whole riad for exclusive use is priced separately: €2,000 to €15,000 per day depending on size, and 30 people need two or three riads.

Excluding flights, alcoholic drinks, tourist tax and agency fees. A private villa, an Agafay camp or an Atlas lodge are quoted on request: the price depends on the venue and the date. What weighs is not the district but the hotel category and the number of nights. For the line-by-line detail, see our [all-inclusive corporate retreat](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/all-inclusive-corporate-retreat-marrakech) guide.

## How to choose, by project

- More than 100 people, dense working programme: Hivernage, no shuttle.

- One-day meeting or a team of 10 to 40 who want to go out at night: Gueliz.

- Leadership team, strategy retreat of 8 to 12: a private riad in the medina (two neighbouring riads beyond that).

- Residential retreat of two or three nights, with pool or golf: the Palmeraie.

- One memorable evening within a city-based programme: Agafay or the lake in the evening, back to town to sleep.

- Small group, three nights or more, aim of switching off: the Atlas.

A common formula combines two areas: a hotel in town for the working days, the desert or the Palmeraie for the evening. That is the model of our [corporate retreat planning timeline](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-retreat-marrakech-planning-timeline). In every case, start with the headcount and the number of nights: the area follows from those two figures.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can a coach drive into the medina?

No. Vehicles stop at the medina gates and the last stretch is on foot, with handcarts for luggage. For a group staying in a riad, allow time for that last stretch in every transfer.

### How far is the Agafay desert?

30 to 40 km south-west of Marrakech, 45 minutes to an hour by road depending on the starting point, with a track at the end. Allow half a day for an evening with the return trip.

### Which area is closest to the airport?

Hivernage, about 3 km from Menara airport, then Gueliz at 4 km and the medina at 5 km. The Palmeraie is some ten kilometres away.

### Can we hold a 300-person plenary in the Palmeraie?

Some Palmeraie resorts have large rooms, but published capacities change: have the capacity confirmed in writing for your date and set-up before committing. For that size, Hivernage remains the safe choice.

### Should we sleep in the desert or return to town?

For a working seminar, the simplest plan is to dine in Agafay and return to the hotel to sleep: the next day’s sessions are held in town. A night under canvas belongs to a team-building programme, with the evening cold in winter and the heat in summer to take into account.

We organise your seminar from venue selection to on-site delivery: see our [seminar organisation in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/seminar-in-marrakech), cost your project with the [seminar budget calculator](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/seminar-team-building-budget-calculator-marrakech), or request a [free quote](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/free-quote?projet=seminaire) with your headcount and dates.
