If you want a sustainable corporate retreat in Marrakech and your team flies in from France, the flights are by far the biggest item to deal with. Using the French environment agency ADEME’s public Impact CO2 calculator with its default settings, a Paris–Marrakech return flight comes to about 710 kg CO2e per participant, while three hotel nights come to about 13 kg with the same tool. The levers that matter most therefore concern travel: a single destination, direct flights, a stay long enough to justify the journey, and shared transfers on the ground. Local, seasonal food, water served in jugs and reusable décor come next. This guide shows you how to work out your own retreat’s footprint with public tools, without made-up figures, and what you can actually change.

## What weighs most in the footprint of a retreat in Morocco?

To answer without guesswork, we queried ADEME’s public Impact CO2 calculator on 14 October 2026. Distances are great-circle distances between each airport and Marrakech-Menara. Figures are per person, in kilograms of CO2 equivalent, rounded to the nearest ten.

| Item, per participant | Default setting | Excluding non-CO2 effects (contrails) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Return flight Paris-CDG–Marrakech (2 × 2,128 km) | about 710 kg | about 390 kg |
| Return flight Lyon–Marrakech (2 × 1,934 km) | about 710 kg | about 390 kg |
| Return flight Nantes–Marrakech (2 × 1,813 km) | about 670 kg | about 370 kg |
| Return flight Bordeaux–Marrakech (2 × 1,602 km) | about 590 kg | about 320 kg |
| Three hotel nights | about 13 kg (4.3 kg per night) | not applicable |
| Return airport transfer by coach (2 × 7 km) | under 1 kg (about 1.5 kg by car alone) | not applicable |

Two points help you read this table. Lyon and Paris come out the same although Paris is further away: the tool applies a lower per-kilometre factor above 2,000 km. And the hotel and coach factors are generic values from this ADEME tool, which is built for the French context and offers no Morocco-specific data. They give an order of magnitude, not a measurement of your hotel.

The conclusion does not depend on those details. For 30 participants flying from Paris, the flights come to about 21 tonnes CO2e and the three hotel nights to under 400 kg. The same tool uses a “citizen target for 2050” of 2 tonnes CO2e of footprint per person as a benchmark: a single Paris–Marrakech return trip represents about 35% of it.

## How do you calculate your own retreat’s footprint?

You can produce a serious estimate in about an hour with free public tools.

- List participants by departure airport. This is what drives the result. A team flying from three cities does not have the same footprint as one flying from a single hub.

- Calculate the flights with Impact CO2 (transport tab, entering the distance) or with the French civil aviation authority’s DGAC emissions calculator, which lists French departure airports and destination airports directly. Note that the DGAC tool states that contrail effects are not included, whereas Impact CO2 includes them by default. Pick one tool, stick with it and say which one you used.

- Add the hotel nights (participants × nights × factor per night).

- Add ground travel: transfers, excursions, shuttles to an evening venue, in kilometres and by vehicle type.

- Add meals, keeping red-meat dishes separate.

If you fly in from outside France, the method is the same; use your own company’s or country’s reference factors if your sustainability team has them, so that the retreat figures line up with the rest of your reporting.

## Does your company have to report these emissions?

That depends on where your company is based. In France, a greenhouse gas emissions report (BEGES) is mandatory for private-law entities with more than 500 employees and for some public bodies. According to the French ecological transition ministry’s page on the decree of 1 July 2022, the text makes it mandatory to account for and report “all significant indirect emissions”, and the scheme requires an emissions report and an action plan to reduce them “every three or four years”.

Retreat flights are indirect emissions for the company. Whether they count as “significant” in your report depends on your business and your other emission sources; that is for whoever owns your carbon report to decide. Other countries have their own rules, so check with your sustainability or legal team. This is not legal advice.

## Which levers genuinely reduce the footprint?

### Fewer flights, and shorter ones

One destination, no domestic flight to link two cities, and departures grouped at the airports closest to your teams. A flight with a stopover covers more kilometres than a direct flight, and distance is what drives the calculation: at a comparable fare and schedule, the direct flight wins. Flights are booked by you or your travel agency; our article on [direct group flights to Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/group-flights-to-marrakech) lists the routes.

### Stay longer

The flights weigh the same whether the retreat lasts two days or three. A longer stay lowers the footprint per working day, but it raises the budget. Here is the trade-off, using the model behind our calculator for 30 people in a 4-star hotel (working days, AV, dinners, airport transfers and local shuttles):

| Length | Estimated budget | Per participant | Paris flights (Impact CO2) per night on site |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2 nights, 2 working days | €11,700 to €19,400 | €390 to €650 | about 355 kg |
| 3 nights, 3 working days | €17,500 to €28,900 | €580 to €960 | about 235 kg |

These budgets are market ranges including a 10% contingency, excluding flights, alcohol, tourist tax and planning fees. The question to ask is simple: will the extra day produce enough useful work to justify its cost? If it does, it also improves the footprint per day.

### Share transfers and outings

A coach emits far less per person than a line of cars. According to Impact CO2, over 50 km a coach comes to about 1.7 kg per person, against about 5.5 kg by car alone. In absolute terms these figures are small next to the flights. The real benefit of group transfers is twofold: the group arrives together and you avoid a scatter of taxis. Our guide to [seminar logistics for 50, 100 or 200 people](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/seminar-for-50-100-200-people-marrakech) covers the organisation.

### Serve local, seasonal food, with less red meat

In the food data shown by Impact CO2, a kilo of beef comes to about 28 kg CO2e, a kilo of chicken about 4.6 kg and a kilo of lentils about 0.6 kg. Swapping beef for poultry, local fish or pulse-based dishes at one or two meals changes the food line without guests feeling they are on a diet, and Moroccan cooking lends itself to this. For special diets, see our article on [dietary requirements at events in Morocco](https://saphyyrevents.fr/gerer-les-restrictions-alimentaires-halal-vegan-casher-lors-dun-evenement-au-maroc) (in French). Ask the caterer to adjust quantities to the confirmed headcount the day before, to cut leftovers.

### Drop bottles and single-use items

These steps barely move the carbon figure, but they are the ones participants see. Ask for water in jugs or dispensers rather than small bottles, refillable bottles if the programme includes outings, badges collected at the end, and undated signage that can be reused. For décor, hire or reuse rather than buy. If you give a gift, choose something useful made locally rather than imported merchandise: our article on [made-in-Morocco guest gifts](https://saphyyrevents.fr/cadeaux-invites-made-in-morocco-argan-ceramique-et-artisanat-local) (in French) has ideas.

### Choose the season and the venue

In Marrakech, the average daily maximum exceeds 33°C from June to August, according to the climate normals for the Marrakech-Menara station. A retreat in spring or autumn needs less air conditioning than one in summer and leaves more room for outdoor sessions; our guide to [the best time for a retreat in Marrakech in 2027](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-retreat-marrakech-2027-best-time) goes month by month. For the venue, ask three questions in writing: how is the meeting room cooled and to what temperature, is water served in jugs, is waste sorted? A venue that answers precisely is worth more than one that displays a label it cannot explain.

## What about carbon offsetting?

Offsetting does not replace reduction. In Morocco, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection presents its voluntary carbon offsetting programme, launched in 2009, as a way for organisations to offset their “irreducible” emissions after a reduction effort. That is the right order: reduce what you can first, then decide what to do about the rest, bearing in mind that offsetting does not undo what was emitted.

Charitable activities during the stay are a separate subject with their own rules: our article on [CSR team building in Morocco](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/csr-team-building-morocco) covers them.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can a retreat in Morocco be sustainable?

It can be run responsibly, but it will not be carbon-neutral: from France, flights remain the largest item. The honest approach is to measure it, reduce what you can and avoid announcing a “zero-carbon retreat”.

### Which tool should we use for flight emissions?

ADEME’s Impact CO2, which includes contrail effects by default, or the DGAC calculator, which does not. Their results are therefore not comparable: always state which tool you used.

### Should we pick a destination closer than Marrakech?

If carbon is your main criterion, a destination you can reach by train emits far less: over the same distance (2,128 km), Impact CO2 gives about 5 kg CO2e by high-speed train against about 350 kg by plane. If you are going abroad anyway, our comparison of [Marrakech, Lisbon and Barcelona](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-retreat-abroad-marrakech-lisbon-barcelona) helps you weigh the options, and the method above lets you put a figure on each.

### Can you build these levers into our programme?

Yes. We coordinate transfers, catering and suppliers on the ground: group transfers, seasonal menus, water in jugs and hired décor are all decided at quote stage. Tell us which ones matter to you.
