A sales kick-off in Marrakech usually runs over two days and two nights: a plenary session to set out the year’s targets, workshops by market or segment, an activity that mixes the regions, and an evening where the awards for the year just ended are handed out. Using the model behind our budget calculator, this programme costs roughly €18,300 to €30,600 for 40 salespeople and €43,800 to €71,300 for 100, at a 4-star hotel, with two working days, AV equipment, an evening event at the hotel with a DJ, one activity and airport transfers, excluding flights. January, the start of the financial year for many companies, is a good fit: afternoons in Marrakech are mild, around 19 °C on average, though evenings are cool. Below are the detailed programme, how to choose the activity and what moves the budget.

## Kick-off, sales conference or incentive: what is the difference?

The three formats look alike on paper but serve different purposes. An incentive rewards part of the team, the winners of a sales contest: it is a reward trip with little work in it. Our guide to an [incentive trip to Morocco](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/incentive-trip-morocco) sets out a full programme. A kick-off brings the whole sales force together at the start of the year to launch it: new targets, new offer, new organisation. Work takes up most of the time, and the social side is there to bond teams who spend the rest of the year in their own territories. To set measurable objectives and review them afterwards, read our method to [measure team building ROI](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/measure-team-building-roi).

The distinction matters for the programme, the budget and, for French employers, the way social security treats the trip: a seminar with genuine business content is not read the same way as a leisure trip. Our article on [company retreats abroad and benefit in kind in France](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/company-retreat-abroad-benefit-in-kind-france) explains this; check with your accountant.

## What does a two-day, two-night programme look like?

This programme is built for a sales kick-off, with market workshops and an awards evening. For a shorter seminar with no sales angle, our [two-day, one-night seminar in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/two-day-seminar-marrakech-programme-budget) gives an hour-by-hour programme.

The flight from Paris takes about 3 h 15 to 3 h 30. Morocco is on GMT all year round: the same time as London in winter, one hour behind Paris. A morning departure from Paris gets the group to the hotel for lunch. Flights are booked by you or your travel agency.

### Day 1: arrival and plenary

- Late morning: airport welcome, transfer, lunch at the hotel.

- 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm: opening plenary, split by a fifteen-minute break around 4 pm. Review of the year, targets, the new offer. Keep talks short and leave half an hour for questions.

- 8.00 pm: dinner at the hotel, with seating mixed across regions.

### Day 2: workshops, activity and evening

- 9.00 am to 12.30 pm: breakout workshops by market, customer segment or product. This is where salespeople work on real cases: objections, pitches, account plans.

- Lunch, then 2.30 pm to 5.00 pm: an activity in mixed teams.

- 8.00 pm: evening event, awards, then a DJ. Amplified music generally stops between midnight and 1 am.

### Day 3: departure

A short closing session in the morning (each team’s commitments, next steps), then transfers to the airport. If return flights leave in the afternoon, the morning can host a second round of workshops.

## Which activity suits a sales team?

Salespeople like to win, and friendly competition works well with them. The trap is recreating, in the middle of the event, the pressure they live with all year. Three simple rules avoid it.

- Mix the teams: regions, key accounts and field sales, veterans and new starters. A team made up of a single territory just replays the sales league table.

- Reward something other than speed: the best idea, the best cooperation, the team that helped the others.

- Avoid physical knockout challenges: everyone should be able to take part, whatever their age or fitness.

A treasure hunt through the medina is a strong choice: it forces teams to organise, split roles and negotiate, with no sales figure at stake. A team cooking contest, a collective artwork such as a [giant mural](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/creative-team-building-marrakech), or quad biking in the Agafay desert for teams who want adrenaline are other options. The right choice depends mainly on the time available and the season. For a sporty, team-based version, see our guide to [corporate olympics in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-olympics-team-building-marrakech).

## How do you get the awards ceremony right?

It is the moment salespeople remember, and the one that can go wrong. Hold it early in the evening, before the DJ, while everyone is still paying attention. Keep it to five or six awards and twenty minutes in total. Alongside the revenue ranking, add categories that do not depend on the size of someone’s patch: growth, new customers won, helping colleagues, bringing a new starter up to speed. A salesperson with a difficult territory should have a chance of getting on stage.

Plan the AV to match: screen, microphone, walk-on music, possibly a photographer. If the evening takes place away from the hotel, check that the venue has a stage or a clear area. Our guide to a [corporate gala dinner in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-gala-dinner-marrakech) compares hotel, riad and Agafay.

## When should the kick-off take place?

At the start of the financial year, which often means January. In Marrakech, January averages are around 19 °C in the afternoon and 6 °C at night, and the sun sets at about 5.50 pm in mid-January. In practice: hold any outdoor activity in the afternoon and finish before dusk, and keep the evening indoors or heated. January also falls outside the high season (March to May and September to November), which in principle leaves more choice of venues. For a shared sporting challenge, read our article on the [Marrakech Marathon for corporate teams](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/marrakech-marathon-corporate-team).

Three sets of dates to avoid or check early in the year:

- Moroccan public holidays in January: 1 January, 11 January (Independence Manifesto Day) and 14 January (Amazigh New Year). In 2027, the 11th is a Monday and the 14th a Thursday. They are paid public holidays, in the private sector too: ask each supplier whether they work on those days.

- Ramadan, expected to begin around 8 or 9 February 2027 and run until Eid al-Fitr around 9 or 10 March, give or take a day. If your kick-off slips into February, the rhythm of the city and of local teams changes: raise it early.

- French school winter holidays, from 6 February to 7 March 2027 depending on the zone, which matter if part of your team is based in France and has children.

For the whole year, see our [month-by-month calendar for a corporate retreat in Marrakech in 2027](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-retreat-marrakech-2027-best-time).

## What budget for 40 or 100 salespeople?

The figures below come from the model behind our online calculator: a 4-star hotel in single rooms for two nights, a meeting room with breaks and lunch, AV (sound, projector, microphones, technician), one dinner at the hotel, the evening event with a DJ, a medina treasure hunt and airport transfers. They include 10% contingency and are rounded to the nearest hundred.

| Set-up | 40 salespeople | 100 salespeople |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 working day, evening at the hotel | €15,800 to €26,600 (€390 to €670 per person) | €37,600 to €61,700 (€380 to €620 per person) |
| 2 working days, evening at the hotel | €18,300 to €30,600 (€460 to €760 per person) | €43,800 to €71,300 (€440 to €710 per person) |
| 1 working day, evening in a privately hired riad | €17,900 to €32,200 (€450 to €810 per person) | €40,400 to €68,300 (€400 to €680 per person) |
| 2 working days, evening in a privately hired riad | €20,400 to €36,200 (€510 to €900 per person) | €46,500 to €77,900 (€470 to €780 per person) |

Three takeaways. Accommodation weighs most: for 40 people, the two nights come to €6,400 to €10,400 before contingency. The second working day adds roughly €2,500 to €4,000 for 40 people, because it covers the room, breaks, lunch and AV. And the riad evening costs more mainly because of the venue hire, which only spreads out with numbers: at 100 salespeople, the per-person gap narrows. Shuttles to the riad come on top.

These figures exclude flights, alcoholic drinks, tourist tax, trophies and gifts, a photographer and organisation fees. They are market ranges, not contractual prices.

## Mistakes to avoid

- Too much plenary: three hours in a row is a long stretch for a field team. Alternate plenary and workshops.

- Workshops without a concrete subject: ask each manager to prepare a real case from their territory.

- A late night before a working session: put the evening event on the last night.

- Scattered arrivals with no one to meet them: if your team flies in from several cities, plan transfers in waves.

- An activity that rebuilds the sales ranking: mix the teams.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long should a sales kick-off last?

Two days and two nights is the most balanced format: a plenary, a day of workshops and an activity, an evening event. One night is possible for a team based close by, but it leaves little time for workshops.

### What budget per salesperson should we plan?

Using our calculator’s model, roughly €380 to €900 per person for two nights at a 4-star hotel, depending on the number of working days, where the evening takes place and the size of the group, excluding flights and organisation fees.

### Is January a good time for Marrakech?

Yes for work and daytime activities: afternoons are mild, around 19 °C on average. Evenings are cool, around 6 °C at night, and the sun sets early, so plan the evening indoors or at a heated venue.

### Does a kick-off need a team building activity?

It is not essential, but half a day in mixed teams is often the only time salespeople from different regions work together. Choose a cooperative activity rather than a knockout one.
