For a corporate retreat from France or Western Europe, Tunisia is closer than Morocco: Tunis is about 1,500 km from Paris and Marrakech about 2,100 km, roughly 2 h 30 in the air against a little over 3 h. Both countries let French nationals in without a visa for up to three months, but both expect a passport. Marrakech stays one to four degrees warmer by day from October to May, has more direct flights from regional airports, and offers venues from a private riad to a congress hall seating about 1,500; Tunis and the Tunisian coast are one hour closer to Paris time, with a milder summer. Here is the comparison item by item, with sources, and our answer depending on the project. We organise retreats in Marrakech, not in Tunisia, so we publish no Tunisian prices.

## The comparison in one table

Sources: the French foreign ministry’s travel advice for Morocco and Tunisia (updated 15 September 2026) for documents and visas; Morocco’s Office des changes for the dirham; the IANA time zone database; 1991–2020 climate normals from NOAA for Marrakech-Menara and from Tunisia’s national meteorological institute for Tunis-Carthage and Monastir. Distances are great-circle distances between airports; flight times were read on fare comparison sites in October 2026 and should be checked when booking. Travellers who are not French nationals should check their own entry rules.

## How long does it take to get there?

Tunisia is closer to every French city, and the gap widens as you start from the south-east. As the crow flies, Tunis is 1,490 km from Paris against 2,130 km for Marrakech; from Lyon, 1,080 km against 1,930; from Marseille, 850 km against 1,760; from Nice, 800 km against 1,890; from Toulouse, 1,060 km against 1,570; from Bordeaux, 1,280 km against 1,600; from Nantes, 1,500 km against 1,810. For a Belgian or Swiss team the picture is the same: 1,630 km against 2,380 from Brussels, 1,100 km against 2,030 from Geneva. The Tunisian resorts are a little further than Tunis: add about 130 km for Monastir and 320 km for Djerba.

In flight time, that is about 2 h 20 to 2 h 45 between Paris and Tunis, against a little over 3 h for Marrakech. Half an hour hardly matters on a three-day retreat; on a two-day format it counts for more.

The real criterion is the direct flight from your participants’ home airport. Marrakech is served non-stop from Paris and most large regional airports, with several airlines per route; our comparison [Agadir or Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/seminar-agadir-or-marrakech) lists the departure airports. For Tunisia, Tunis and Monastir are linked non-stop to Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Nice by Tunisair, Nouvelair or Transavia depending on the season; other cities have fewer frequencies, sometimes one or two a week. Schedules change every season: list your participants’ departure airports before choosing, and block seats early. Our guide to [group flights to Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/group-flights-to-marrakech) explains the method.

## What will the weather be like?

| Average daily high (°C) | Marrakech | Tunis | Monastir |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Oct | 28.5 | 26.7 | 26.5 |
| Nov | 23.1 | 21.5 | 21.9 |
| Dec | 20.1 | 17.6 | 18.1 |
| Jan | 19.1 | 16.4 | 16.9 |
| Feb | 20.7 | 16.8 | 17.2 |
| Mar | 23.6 | 19.4 | 19.5 |
| Apr | 25.7 | 22.3 | 21.8 |
| May | 29.4 | 26.5 | 25.5 |

From October to May, Marrakech keeps a one- to four-degree lead by day over Tunis and the Tunisian coast. In midwinter the difference shows: 19 to 21 °C average highs from December to February in Marrakech, against 16 to 18 °C in Tunisia. That is what makes an outdoor lunch in January realistic in Marrakech. Nights, on the other hand, are cooler in Marrakech, far from the sea: plan braziers and blankets for an outdoor evening in winter, wherever you are.

In summer the order flips. With a 37.7 °C average high in July, Marrakech means air-conditioned sessions and activities early in the morning or in the evening; Tunis (34 °C) and above all Monastir (32.5 °C, with the sea breeze) stay more liveable. Our article on [team building in Marrakech in summer](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/team-building-marrakech-summer-heat) shows how to adapt a programme to the heat.

Rain is the other difference: Tunis gets close to 490 mm a year and Monastir 365 mm, mostly from October to February, against about 220 mm in Marrakech. An outdoor activity in November needs a covered fallback more often in Tunisia than in Morocco.

The religious calendar is the same in both countries: in 2027, Ramadan is expected around 8 February, give or take a day depending on the sighting of the moon, for about a month. Restaurant hours, alcohol service and the pace of local teams change during that period. Our [2027 calendar for a Marrakech retreat](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-retreat-marrakech-2027-best-time) lists the dates to avoid.

## Which documents do your participants need?

In both cases, a passport. For Morocco, the French foreign ministry is unambiguous: a passport valid for the whole stay, and entry is no longer possible on a national ID card alone. For Tunisia, the same source states that since 1 January 2025 all visitors must present a passport valid for at least three months on the date of entry, and strongly recommends the passport over the ID card, even for extended cards. No visa is required from a French national for a stay of up to three months, in Morocco or in Tunisia. Other nationalities should check their own rules with the consulate.

In practice the rule is the same for both destinations: ask every participant, at registration, which document they hold and when it expires. A new passport cannot be obtained in a few days. For Tunisia, also check that the passport is still valid three months after the arrival date.

## Dirham or dinar: what changes?

Neither currency can be bought in Europe; on the way home, only 2,000 dirhams in notes may leave Morocco, and the dinar may not leave Tunisia. In Morocco, the Office des changes lets travellers enter and leave with at most 2,000 dirhams in notes; foreign currency can be brought in, with a customs declaration from 100,000 dirhams. In Tunisia, the dinar is not convertible outside the country and foreign currency brought in must be declared on arrival above a threshold set by Tunisian customs; the form stamped on arrival is what lets you change the leftover back. Check the current threshold on the Tunisian customs website before departure, as the Tunisian press quotes different figures depending on the case.

For the company, the practical question is paying suppliers: contract currency, deposit, international transfer. For Morocco, our guide on [working with a DMC in Morocco](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/dmc-morocco-destination-management-company) covers who pays what. For participants the advice is the same in both countries: bring euros, change locally, keep the receipts.

## Does the time difference get in the way?

Tunisia runs on Paris time in winter and one hour behind in summer, because it stays on GMT+1 all year without daylight saving. Morocco returned to GMT on 20 September 2026: Marrakech is one hour behind Paris in winter and two hours behind in summer, with no more clock change during Ramadan. For a retreat with a video call to head office or a speaker joining remotely, two hours in summer are felt: schedule sessions in local time and print the Paris (or London) time next to it in the programme.

## Do you need special insurance?

The European Health Insurance Card works in neither Morocco nor Tunisia. In both cases, check that every participant is covered for medical care and repatriation, through the company’s policy or a dedicated one, and that the event itself carries liability cover. Our guide to [safety and insurance for a team building abroad](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/team-building-abroad-safety-insurance-morocco) lists the points to check.

## Which venues for which format?

This is where the two destinations differ most. Within an hour’s drive, Marrakech gathers hotels in Hivernage and the Palmeraie with proper meeting rooms, private riads for a leadership team, villas for a residential retreat, camps in the Agafay desert for an evening, and a congress centre whose main auditorium seats about 1,500. Our pick of [seminar venues in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/seminar-venues-in-marrakech) and our guide to a [conference for 300 to 1,000 delegates](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/conference-convention-marrakech-300-1000-delegates) cover every group size.

Tunisia concentrates its conference hotels on the coast, between Hammamet, Sousse, Monastir and Djerba, and in Tunis. It is a resort offer, pleasant for a relaxed format with the beach at the foot of the hotel. We do not know it from the inside and we publish no capacities or prices we have not checked: ask the hotel, in writing, for your date and set-up.

## And the budget?

We publish no prices for Tunisia. Our calculator relies on a price model built for Marrakech and does not apply elsewhere. For a 40-person retreat in Marrakech, two nights in a 4-star hotel in single rooms, two working days with AV, two dinners and airport transfers, the model gives about €14,600 to €23,800 with a 10% contingency, or €364 to €596 per participant, excluding flights, alcoholic drinks, tourist tax and agency fees. The line-by-line detail is in our [all-inclusive corporate retreat in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/all-inclusive-corporate-retreat-marrakech) guide.

To compare the two countries, the only reliable method is to send the same brief to each supplier: number of nights, hotel category, working days, meals, AV, transfers, flights apart, amounts with or without tax. Our [event RFP template](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/event-rfp-template-compare-quotes-marrakech) is built for that. One last point: the destination changes nothing about the tax treatment of the retreat. What matters to the authorities is the share of actual work in the programme, as explained in our article on a [company retreat abroad and benefits in kind](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/company-retreat-abroad-benefit-in-kind-france).

## How to choose, in one sentence

If your retreat fits in two days, leaves from south-eastern France and is about the beach, Tunisia has the edge on distance and time zone. If you travel between October and May, your participants come from several cities, and you want a real change of scenery with the choice between riad, desert and large hotel, pick Marrakech, after checking passports and the calendar. For a comparison with two European destinations, see [Marrakech, Lisbon or Barcelona](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-retreat-abroad-marrakech-lisbon-barcelona).
