A three-night incentive trip to Morocco, based in Marrakech in a five-star hotel with one conference day, a sunrise balloon flight, a cooking class and a private dinner in the Agafay desert, costs roughly €27,100 to €43,900 for 20 winners and €47,200 to €75,100 for 40, according to our budget calculator. That is €1,350 to €2,200 per head for the smaller group and €1,180 to €1,880 for the larger one, flights excluded. What separates an incentive from a corporate retreat is not the destination but the purpose: you are rewarding people, not training them. That single difference shapes the programme, the budget and, for French employers, the way the social security authorities will look at the trip.

## How is an incentive trip different from a corporate retreat?

A retreat takes a team somewhere else to work together. An incentive takes the people who hit a target: the top sales performers of the year, a dealer network, a team that delivered a hard project. The group is selected by results rather than by the org chart, and its members tend to expect to be treated as guests. For a sales team at the start of the year, see our guide to a [sales kick-off in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/sales-kick-off-marrakech).

In practice, four things shift compared with a standard retreat:

- The hotel: you aim higher, because the room is part of the reward.

- The working time: it shrinks, sometimes to a single conference or awards day.

- The experiences: you pick things people would not do on their own, such as a dawn balloon flight or dinner in the desert.

- The announcement: the trip is launched months ahead, with clear eligibility rules, because it is meant to motivate before it rewards.

To choose the setting, our comparison of a [hotel or private estate in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/hotel-estate-team-building-marrakech) goes through the criteria and the budget gap between four and five stars. Here we build one specific programme and price it line by line. Saphyyr can plan the whole programme, venue included: see our [seminar in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/seminar-in-marrakech) service page.

## What does a typical three-night programme look like?

The easiest format to get signed off is a long weekend: out on Thursday, back on Sunday. Morocco has stayed on GMT all year round since 20 September 2026, so Marrakech is on the same time as London in winter and one hour behind in summer; from Paris, the flight takes a little over three hours and you gain one or two hours on arrival day.

### Thursday: arrival and welcome dinner

Airport meet-and-greet, transfer to the hotel, check-in and free time. In the evening the whole group sits down together for the first time. This is when you tell people why they are there: a word from leadership, a few numbers from the year, the names of the winners.

### Friday: the conference day

A full day in a meeting room with breaks and lunch: results, next year’s plan, talks from the best performers, the awards. It is the only working day in the programme. Dinner that evening is somewhere other than the hotel, so the group sees a bit of the city.

### Saturday: balloon, cooking class and desert evening

An early start for a balloon flight at sunrise. One long-established operator quotes an average total duration of four and a half hours, of which forty to sixty minutes are spent in the air, and says the pilot decides on weather cancellations, either the day before or on site, with a new date or a refund. Keep Saturday morning free of anything else. After a rest, a Moroccan cooking class in small groups. In the evening, coaches take everyone to the Agafay desert, less than an hour’s drive away, for a private dinner with live musicians.

### Sunday: departure

A free morning depending on flight times, then transfers to the airport. Anyone who wants to stay longer does so at their own expense; more on that below.

For more on the two highlights, see our guides to [hot-air ballooning for company groups](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/hot-air-balloon-marrakech-company-group) and [corporate events in the Agafay desert](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-event-agafay-desert).

## What does it cost for 20 and for 40 winners?

The figures below come from the same model as our online calculator: five-star hotel, single rooms, three nights, one working day with AV, two dinners, a private evening in Agafay with live music, a cooking class, the balloon flight, airport transfers and local transport for three days. The model adds a 10% contingency. Amounts are rounded to the nearest hundred euros.

| Item | 20 winners | 40 winners |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Five-star accommodation (3 nights) | €9,600 – €15,600 | €19,200 – €31,200 |
| Conference day (room, breaks, lunch) | €1,300 – €2,000 | €2,600 – €4,000 |
| AV (sound, projection, technician) | €300 – €600 | €300 – €600 |
| Two dinners | €1,000 – €1,800 | €2,000 – €3,600 |
| Agafay evening: dinner | €1,200 – €1,900 | €2,400 – €3,800 |
| Agafay evening: venue hire | €5,000 – €9,000 | €5,000 – €9,000 |
| Agafay evening: return coaches | €200 – €300 | €400 – €600 |
| Live musicians | €1,000 – €2,000 | €1,000 – €2,000 |
| Moroccan cooking class | €900 – €1,400 | €1,800 – €2,800 |
| Sunrise balloon flight | €3,400 – €4,000 | €6,800 – €8,000 |
| Return airport transfers | €100 – €200 | €200 – €500 |
| Local transport (3 days) | €600 – €1,100 | €1,200 – €2,200 |
| Total including 10% contingency | €27,100 – €43,900 | €47,200 – €75,100 |
| Per person | €1,350 – €2,200 | €1,180 – €1,880 |

Three things stand out.

Accommodation is the biggest line. It accounts for about 40% of the costs for 20 people and 45% for 40, so that is where most of the trade-off happens. The same programme in a four-star hotel comes to €21,500 to €34,800 for 20 winners (€1,070 to €1,740 per head) and €36,000 to €56,800 for 40 (€900 to €1,420 per head).

Fixed costs favour larger groups. Hiring the Agafay camp and the musicians costs the same for 20 or 40 guests. Per person, the venue hire alone drops from about €250–€450 to €125–€225. For a small group, a dinner in a shared camp or a riad may do the job.

The working day is cheap. Taking out the conference day and its AV only lowers the budget by about €90 to €140 per head for 20 winners, and €80 to €130 for 40. Yet, as the next section shows, that day can change how the trip is treated for social security purposes.

Not included: flights, which you or your travel agent book; alcoholic drinks; tourist tax; and organisation fees. The model has no line for welcome gifts, a photographer, [golf](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/golf-incentive-corporate-retreat-marrakech) or a hammam either: those are quoted separately.

## Is an incentive trip a taxable benefit?

The answer depends on where your company is based, so check your own country’s rules with your adviser. For French employers, the official social security bulletin (BOSS) covers incentives, which it calls “voyages de stimulation”, in the same sentence as seminars. Such trips must involve an organised work programme and particular constraints for the employee, and the employer must produce that programme and justify the costs incurred by each employee (§1490). When the employer pays for the trip and it is “predominantly professional” in nature, no benefit in kind is recorded, even for the leisure part (§1520; BOSS, business expenses, §1490 to §1520, in French).

A leisure trip paid by the employer, on the other hand, is pay and attracts contributions (§1510). The BOSS gives as a counter-example a trip where staff worked less than half the time spent on site and which was open to spouses for a token contribution (§1520). For a trip organised by the works council (CSE), see our guide to the [staff trip to Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/staff-trip-marrakech-works-council).

To be straight about the programme above: one conference day over three nights does not make work the main purpose. That leaves two options.

- Own the reward. The trip is a gift and its value goes into the winners’ pay. That is a perfectly sound choice, as long as payroll budgets for it from day one.

- Build a working incentive. More days in the meeting room, a written programme, attendance organised on working time. The trip then looks much more like a retreat.

Our article on [company retreats abroad and benefit in kind in France](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/company-retreat-abroad-benefit-in-kind-france) lists the documents to keep and shows a programme that holds up. Either way, have your accountant sign off the set-up before you announce the trip: this article is not a substitute for their advice.

## Can partners come along?

It is a common request, and it changes the maths. Under the BOSS, when a French employer pays for the trip of a spouse who is not an employee of the company, that cost must be added back into the contribution base (§1520). If you open the trip to partners, the cleanest approach is to have them pay their actual share. To do that, ask for a quote where every night, every meal and every activity is priced separately, so the cost of one extra person can be isolated without argument.

## When should you go, and how early should you book?

High season in Marrakech runs from March to May and from September to November. These are the most comfortable months and the ones when the best venues are booked early. If your incentive rewards the past year, a spring date often lands just after the results are closed: secure the hotel as early as you can.

Two calendar points to check. Ramadan 2027 is expected to start around 8 or 9 February, give or take a day, with Eid al-Fitr around 9 or 10 March. A celebration dinner is still possible during that period, but the pace of the city changes. In winter, evenings are cool: the average December low is around 7°C, so a desert dinner needs braziers and blankets. Our guide to the [best time for a corporate retreat in Marrakech in 2027](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-retreat-marrakech-2027-best-time) goes through the calendar month by month, and our [planning timeline](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/corporate-retreat-marrakech-planning-timeline) sets out the deadlines.

## What we do, and what we don’t

Our team works from offices in Paris and Marrakech. We plan the incentive with you remotely, in English or French, then deliver it on the ground: choosing and negotiating the hotel, the activities, the evening and the transfers, with a team on site from the morning until the last participant leaves. You deal with one contact for every supplier. Agency, ground handler or DMC: read our article on what a [destination management company in Morocco](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/dmc-morocco-destination-management-company) does.

Flights are not part of our service: you or your travel agent book them. We then fit the transfers and the programme around the flight times you send us.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the per-person budget for a three-night incentive in Marrakech?

For the programme described here, allow about €1,350 to €2,200 per head for 20 winners in a five-star hotel, or €1,070 to €1,740 in a four-star, flights excluded and 10% contingency included. With 40 winners, the cost per head falls because some costs are fixed.

### Does an incentive need a working day?

It is not compulsory, but it gives you a stage for strategy and public recognition. For French employers, the BOSS only rules out a benefit in kind when an employer-paid trip is predominantly professional. In our reading, one day over three nights does not meet that bar; your accountant should make the call.

### Can the balloon flight be cancelled?

Yes. One long-established operator says the pilot decides on weather cancellations, the day before or on site, with a new date or a refund. Build a fallback morning into the programme.

### Are flights included?

No. Flights are booked by you or your travel agent. Our budgets cover accommodation, meals, activities, the evening event and local transfers.

### How far ahead should we start?

As early as possible for high season, March to May and September to November, when the best venues are booked early. Outside those months lead times are shorter: send us your dates and we will tell you what is still feasible.

We build incentives where every item is priced separately and the share of working time is decided with you: see our formats on the [team building in Marrakech](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/team-building-in-marrakech) page, estimate your budget with the [retreat and team building budget calculator](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/seminar-team-building-budget-calculator-marrakech), or ask for a [free quote](https://saphyyrevents.fr/en/free-quote) with your dates and number of winners.
